In Colombia, over the years, various initiatives have been implemented to strengthen the teaching and learning of foreign languages in basic and secondary education, with the aim of preparing individuals capable of functioning successfully in the contemporary world. However, several studies have pointed out that even upon completing higher education, Colombian professionals are not competent users of the foreign language. One of the skills in which the greatest difficulties have been identified is reading comprehension, due to its nature as a higher-order cognitive ability and the demand for various linguistic and cultural knowledge for its mastery. Considering these findings, it is clear that there is still a long way to go and a constant need to seek strategies that improve the learning experience. Therefore, this didactic work aims to develop a module of five workshops focused on strengthening the reading skills in English of upper secondary school students, based on theories and strategies proposed for teaching English as a second language.Publicación En el sendero del caracol. Using a hermeneutic and comparative approach, the contributions of authors such as Maryanne Wolf, Hartmut Rosa, Byung-Chul Han, Umberto Eco, Roland Barthes, Alberto Manguel, and Paulo Freire, among others, are analyzed to argue that deep reading constitutes a complex cognitive and symbolic practice, capable of transforming the reader's relationship with the text and with the world. The metaphor of the snail articulates this proposal as an image of a slow, contemplative reading that resists the vertigo of immediacy. The article explores the pedagogical, philosophical, and neurocognitive implications of this way of reading, highlighting strategies for carrying it out in educational and digital contexts. It seeks to highlight the importance of this competence in the learning and communication processes in the university context. To this end, a qualitative methodology was used, focused on the critical analysis of research and theories on the subject to build a theoretical and critical framework on the subject from cognitive, ethical, and pedagogical perspectives. Key findings include how active listening strengthens the development of communication skills, memory, comprehension, and critical analysis, fostering an environment of continuous feedback and collaboration in the classroom. Given this, it is concluded that active listening also contributes to the acquisition of complex knowledge and the development of empathy, factors that are crucial in the multicultural university context.
