It examines some of the major policies and international agreements, highlighting a predominant focus on mitigation strategies over adaptation strategies. Subsequently, it emphasizes the context of Latin America and specifically Colombia, a country with low contributions to global GHG emissions but highly vulnerable to climate change, and proposes management alternatives for companies.Publicación Análisis de la contribución de las empresas mineras con operación en Colombia a la biodiversidad(Universidad EAFIT, 2025) Giraldo Posada, Ana Margarita; Correa Carmona, María Nathalia; Orjuela Hidalgo, Ana María; Ramírez Soto, Juan DavidThe legal mining sector in Colombia has both direct and indirect impacts on the areas where it operates. Mining companies have developed and implemented various programs focused on biodiversity conservation and preservation; however, these initiatives have not been effectively communicated to stakeholders, limiting recognition of their positive environmental impacts and contributions to ecosystems. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the contribution of mining companies operating in Colombia to biodiversity. To achieve this, a review of the sustainability reports of 11 mining companies operating in Colombia, published over a five-year period (2019–2023), was conducted. This review incorporated international biodiversity standards and the TSM Sustainable Mining Standard adapted for Colombia. Based on the findings, a methodological tool was designed and applied to five companies in the sample. It was then presented through interviews with environmental authorities and industry experts to gather their perspectives on its relevance. The results of this study reveal that mining companies in Colombia undertake actions that not only align with the targets of SDG 15 but also contribute to other SDGs. However, despite their positive impact on biodiversity, these efforts are not adequately visible or communicated. Therefore, it is crucial to ensure that biodiversity-related actions are disclosed to all stakeholders through accessible channels, such as management and sustainability reports, so that the sector's efforts and contributions are properly recognized.Publicación Análisis de la gestión de riesgos estratégicos para la sostenibilidad en el sector logístico de Antioquia(Universidad EAFIT, 2025) Ruiz Acevedo, Valentina; Rodríguez Salamanca, Cristian David; Rodríguez Serrano, Oscar Fernando; Guerrero Latorre, Jorge HarleyPublicación Análisis de la vinculación al esquema de pagos por servicios ambientales -PSA-de PYMES en el Oriente antioqueño, como modelo gerencial para la sostenibilidad(Universidad EAFIT, 2025) García Urrea, Jaime Andrés; González Valencia, AlejandroThis research analyzes the connection between small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and the Payment for Ecosystem Services (PES) scheme to promote actions that reduce the impact of human activities. Through the voluntary compensation provided by these companies, the establishment of links with farming communities has been facilitated, where forest conservation is regarded as a cultural activity that also generates income and improves the living conditions of those who protect these ecosystems, which are crucial for regulating water quality and supply. Local management models are identified that contribute to the consolidation and sustainability of payments to the communities that protect these essential resources, while simultaneously preserving farming culture and its practices for forest protection and ecosystem conservation. In this context, the involved companies have implemented an organizational management model that incorporates styles and characteristics aimed at promoting equity toward rural communities as a mechanism of sustainability, integrating it within management practices focused on improving both environmental conditions and the quality of life for farming families who depend on forests and productive systems. This model, driven by SMEs, has enabled the implementation of PES in the areas influenced by their projects by analyzing various environmental, social, and economic structures as a strategy for sustainability and a planning tool, adding significant value to their products, broadening the spectrum of profitability, and benefiting the products and services that these organizations provide.Publicación Análisis de prefactibilidad para la implementación de una planta de residuos sólidos(Universidad EAFIT, 2025) Builes Taborda, María Isabel; Montaño Largo, Paola Andrea; Guerrero Latorre, Jorge Harley; Sapiencia; Simex S.A.S.; Fundación Ave FénixThe municipality of Corinto, Cauca, faces significant challenges in the management of its solid waste, with approximately thirty-one thousand eight hundred and seventy-two inhabitants and a considerable monthly production of urban waste. This waste is deposited in an open dump, which causes environmental damage to the soil, air, and water. Although in the rural area there is some use of organic waste, the lack of environmental awareness and the lack of adequate education contribute to the contamination problem. This degree work focuses on conducting a pre-feasibility analysis for the implementation of a solid waste plant in Corinto, Cauca, with the objective of developing sustainable practices that contribute to the proper management of waste and to the strengthening of environmental conservation in the region. A mixed research methodology will be used, combining quantitative and qualitative approaches to evaluate the feasibility of the project. The methodology is adapted to the preinvestment phase and considers technical, regulatory, environmental, and economic aspects of solid waste management. It began with an environmental analysis, followed by a technical study that provided information on project requirements. Legal aspects were also evaluated, as well as possible environmental impacts, proposing measures to mitigate them. Finally, a financial analysis was carried out to evaluate the profitability of the project, using indicators such as the Net Present Value and the Internal Rate of Return. This work seeks to offer an integral solution for solid waste management in Corinto, Cauca, that promotes environmental sustainability and contributes to the integral development of the territory.Publicación Análisis del desempeño financiero de los fondos de inversión con enfoque de sostenibilidad(Universidad EAFIT, 2025) Barón Rosero, Juan Camilo; Téllez Falla, Diego FernandoThis research analyzes the relationship between the sustainability approach of European investment funds and their financial performance, considering how the SFDR classification influences investment decisions and sectoral distribution on funds. For this purpose, a sample of 21 European funds was collected, distributed equally across SFDR classifications during the 2019–2023 period, analyzing performance, volatility, and sectoral allocation. Statistical methods were applied to evaluate the relationship between sustainability and profitability. It was determined that flexibility in the integration of ESG factors in investment strategies and sectoral distribution can optimize financial performance, demonstrating greater resilience in times of crisis. The results provide relevant information on the effectiveness of SFDR regulation, being key information for investors, regulators, and other financial market participants, promoting more informed investment decisions aligned with sustainability principles.Publicación Análisis prospectivo SROI – estudio aplicado a proyecto de generación de energía renovable(Universidad EAFIT, 2024) Moreno Torres, María Paula; Sandoval Parra, Cristian Camilo; Ortega Arango, SantiagoThe path of energy transition under sustainability criteria requires the promotion of projects that involve generation sources from renewable natural resources, as well as the implementation of innovative technologies and the participation of local communities as the main actors in the governance of natural resources within their territories. Traditionally, the analysis of these projects has focused on the contrast between socio-environmental costs and benefits, serving as a tool for decision-making related to their financial viability and socio-environmental performance. Recently, the projection of a theory of change and the estimation of the Social Return on Investment have gained relevance as tools for designing projects aimed at creating social and environmental value in the territories where interventions will take place. In this research, we employ the theory of change and estimate the social return on investment applied to the Renewable Energy Feasibility Project of the Río Ambeima (Tolima, Colombia), whose analysis will be useful in later stages for informed decision-making, periodic monitoring of social value indicators, and continuous improvement in community management processes and socioenvironmental investment. The methodology allowed us to identify four major needs and/or problems to be resolved along with their respective expected outcomes. Considering that this is a prospective model, the SROI analysis was conducted individually and differentiated for the two main stages of the project, covering a total time horizon of fourteen years. Through the determination of five indicators and seven proxies for the valuation of the 4 expected outcomes, the SROI analysis revealed that for every monetary unit invested in the project, two units of social and economic value are generated, demonstrating a significant improvement in the expected change variables.Publicación Asegurando la sostenibilidad financiera : implementación de buenas prácticas de gobierno al interior de Jardín Exotics(Universidad EAFIT, 2024) Polanía Marín, Santiago; Téllez Falla, Diego FernandoThis work addresses the implementation of corporate governance in Jardín Exotics, an avocado and gulupa export company that has six shareholder. The implementation must be carried out considering the particularities of the agricultural sector and addressing key aspects such as transparency, accountability, generational changes, roles and responsibilities of the shareholders, promoting sustainability, operational and financial efficiency, the latter aimed at the financial sustainability of the company through increasingly competitive and profitable sales prices in Europe. Using panel models applied to 32 departments over the 2008-2019 period, climate variables are incorporated, and spatial dependence is modeled to capture both the direct and indirect effects of climate on economic growth and interregional convergence. Three main findings emerge from the results: (1) the interaction between the deviation from departmental average temperature and convergence, with an estimated coefficient between -0.03 and -0.044, suggests that temperature variations have more significantly impacted economic growth in the more developed departments; (2) evidence of nonlinearities in the climate-growth relationship, with an optimal deviation threshold of 0.32 °C from the historical average, beyond which negative effects on growth are observed; and (3) the presence of spatial spillover effects, where climatic variations in one department impact the economic performance of neighboring regions. These findings contribute to understanding how climate change influences regional growth and convergence patterns, highlighting the importance of implementing mitigation and adaptation measures that consider both local effects and regional interdependencies, as well as the critical thresholds identified in this analysis (0.32°C).Publicación Desafíos en la gestión comercial de las empresas familiares en Colombia : caso Creaciones Monteblanco SAS(Universidad EAFIT, 2025) Manevich Cohen, Susan; Vallejo Vélez, Juan Camilo; Giraldo Hernández, Gina MaríaÍtem Determinantes de la tasa de supervivencia de las empresas formales en los departamentos de Colombia(Universidad EAFIT, 2023) Arias Mejía, José Miguel; García Alzate, Samuel; Arias Mejía, José Miguel; Tamayo Plata, Mery Patricia; Chaparro Cardona, Juan CamiloThe business situation in Colombia faces challenges due to deficiencies in productivity, technology, and institutional arrangements that limit the survival and economic growth of companies. This study aims to identify variables influencing business survival at the departmental level and analyze how institutional, social, and economic factors affect this phenomenon. Using data from the Unique Business and Social Registry (RUES) of the Colombian Chambers of Commerce Confederation and the Departmental Competitiveness Index of the Private Council of Competitiveness, statistical methods such as the Kaplan-Meier estimator and regressions with departmental fixed effects are applied to examine the influence of different variables on the departmental rate of business survival, distinguishing by economic sectors and company sizes. It is found that business survival rates in Colombia decrease from 66.1% in the first year to 29.5% in the sixth year, but there are significant disparities between departmental rates. The influence of various indicators and institutional, infrastructure, and human capital factors, as well as the business environment and the financial system on departmental rates of business survival, varies according to the size and sector of the companies. Through public policies that impact these factors, it is possible to influence business survival rates. However, it is suggested that certain public policies aimed at addressing economic and social issues may negatively affect business survival rates as a collateral effect, without this having negative repercussions on economic development, since this rate may experience declines in the midst of processes of creative destruction.Publicación Diagnóstico para la sostenibilidad empresarial : una herramienta para contribuir a la generación de valor compartido en Colombia(Universidad EAFIT, 2025) Torres Gutiérrez, Juan Felipe; Álvarez Delgado, SusanaThis thesis aims to develop a methodological tool to support Colombian private-sector companies in transitioning towards sustainable business models through the integration of strategies focused on creating shared value. Based on a literature review and a comparative analysis of thirteen national and international certification standards, a diagnostic questionnaire was designed comprising five key dimensions: governance and sustainable strategy, environmental management and resource efficiency, human capital and labor practices, social impact and community engagement, and innovation and shared value creation. The questionnaire enables organizations to identify their maturity level in sustainability, assess organizational strengths and gaps, and receive specific technical recommendations per dimension. The research is grounded in a robust conceptual framework that interconnects corporate social responsibility, sustainability, social enterprise, and shared value creation, demonstrating their mutual reinforcement and relevance to the Colombian business context. As a result, the study delivers a practical, flexible, and context-sensitive tool applicable to both large corporations and small and medium-sized enterprises. This proposal aims to bridge the gap between sustainability discourse and its real-world implementation, contributing to the transformation of traditional business models into more inclusive, responsible, and resilient enterprises.Publicación Documentación de buenas prácticas de desarrollo sostenible en la construcción de viviendas de interés social en Colombia(Universidad EAFIT, 2023) Medina Romero, Felipe Andrés; Henao Arango, María CeciliaThis work documents good sustainable development practices in the construction of social housing in Colombia. For this purpose, a qualitative approach, descriptive scope and non-experimental design is developed in which it is documented through primary sources of information such as semi-structured interviews, which were carried out with the sustainability and environmental directors of some of the largest and most important construction companies in the country, as well as potential clients of VIS social housing. The results reveal the best practices that the interviewees recognized in this matter, in topics such as: materials, energy, air, water, light, environment and biodiversity, among others. Aspects are highlighted such as the different certifications that exist worldwide and nationally, impediments to the execution of these good practices in this type of construction and the relevance of these implementations to obtain a competitive advantage in organizations. Furthermore, it will be evident whether sustainable development in the construction of buildings constitutes a tool that contributes to favorably or unfavorably encouraging the preferences of potential VIS home buyers towards homes that have the benefits that sustainable construction brings. Finally, this degree work is proposed as a document that identifies and validates some of the best practices implemented in the country as success factors, thus achieving brand differentiation in the sector via sustainable development.Publicación Economía circular en el manejo de cubiertas plásticas usadas en invernaderos(Universidad EAFIT, 2024) Ramírez Mora, Diana Mayerly; Cano Zapata, CatalinaOne of the main axes of the Colombian economy is agriculture. According to data from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development of Colombia, this activity occupies 3% of the national territory; One of the departments that has high horticultural productivity is the department of Cundinamarca, which represents 16% of the country's total production. Agriculture in Cundinamarca is one of the main economic drivers that moves the region, one of the crops grown is tomato, it is managed in a protected manner through greenhouses to improve its performance and production, the second largest agricultural sector. coverage is that of floriculture, where Cundinamarca is responsible for the production of 78% of the country's total flowers. Other types of crops, such as planting ornamental plants, require greenhouses entirely. Depending on the materials that make up a greenhouse, it is estimated that 80% is plastic, represented in the roof and wall construction covers. These covers have a variable useful life, depending on the crop being managed, it can vary between six months and years. , the plastic cover having a maximum approximate life of five to six years to be permanently discarded. The problem of sustainable management of these covers focuses on the efficient practice for managing plastic waste generated by the farmers' union in Cundinamarca. At a global level, a series of methodologies have been implemented and case studies have been carried out regarding the alternatives that have been implemented representing environmental and economic benefits for farmers. This research offers an alternative application of circular economy in the management of covers used in greenhouses, proposing a practical solution that generates synergy in the farmers' union in the department of Cundinamarca.Publicación El rol de la alianza Juntémonos por Cartagena en la promoción de empresas sociales para la superación de la pobreza(Universidad EAFIT, 2025) Garzón Blanco, Susana Patricia; Ramírez Gómez, Mauricio AndrésPublicación Estandarización de los reportes de sostenibilidad y su relación con el desempeño financiero en las empresas del Mercado Integrado Latinoamericano (MILA)(Universidad EAFIT, 2025) Ruiz Tamayo, David; Charry Rodríguez, Paula Viviana; Téllez Falla, Diego Fernando; Restrepo Ochoa, Diana ConstanzaThis research analyzes the implications for the perception of the quality of sustainability practices assessed through ESG ratings (Environmental, Social and Governance) and the adoption of reporting standards for non-financial information in leading companies in Mercado Integrado Latinoamericano (MILA). It also examines how standardization, homogeneity, and information asymmetry influence the actual valuation of assets and investor perceptions. To address this analysis, a quantitative model was constructed to measure the relationship between good sustainability practices and financial profitability.
