Regional science is the study of social problems that have a spatial dimension. The availability of satellite remote sensing data has increased significantly in the last two decades, and these data constitute a useful data source for mapping the composition of urban settings and analyzing changes over time. The increasing spatial resolution of commercial satellite imagery has influenced the emergence of new research and applications of regional science in urban settlements because it is now possible to identify individual objects of the urban fabric. The most common applications found in the literature are the detection of urban deprivation hot spots, quality of life index assessment, urban growth analysis, house value estimation, urban population estimation and urban social vulnerability assessment. The satellite remote sensing imagery used in these applications has medium, high or very high spatial resolution, such as images from Landsat MSS, Landsat TM and ETM+, SPOT, ASTER, IRS, Ikonos and QuickBird. Consistent relationships between socio-economic variables derived from censuses and field surveys and proxy variables of vegetation coverage measured from satellite remote sensing data have been found in several cities in the US. Different approaches and techniques have been applied successfully around the world, but local research is always needed to account for the unique elements of each place. Spectral mixture analysis, object-oriented classifications and image texture measures are some of the techniques of image processing that have been implemented with good results. Many regional scientists remain skeptical that satellite remote sensing will produce useful information for their work. More local research is needed to demonstrate the real potential and utility of satellite remote sensing for regional science in urban environments.Ítem Agglomeration Economies in the Presence of an Informal Sector The Colombian Case(ARMAND COLIN, 2019-04-30) Garcia, Gustavo Adolfo; Universidad EAFIT. Departamento de Economía y Finanzas; Research in Spatial Economics (RISE)This paper analyzes the relationship between agglomeration economies and productivity in the context of a developing country in presence of an informal sector. Using data from Colombia, we examine whether the informal sector achieves benefits from agglomeration economies as well as whether there are differences between the formal and informal sectors in terms of agglomeration returns. We find that agglomeration economies have a significantly positive effect on productivity in the informal sector: informal workers in denser areas will earn approximately 11% more than those in less dense areas.Ítem Algunos conceptos de la econometría espacial y el análisis exploratorio de datos espaciales.(Universidad EAFIT, 2008-10-01) Acevedo, Ingrid; Velásquez, H.; Universidad EAFIT. Departamento de Economía y Finanzas; Research in Spatial Economics (RISE)An exposure model is a key component for assessing potential human and economic losses from natural disasters. An exposure model consists of a spatially disaggregated description of the infrastructure and population of a region under study. Depending on the size of the settlement area, developing such models can be a costly and time-consuming task. In this paper we use a manually annotated dataset consisting of approximately 10,000 photos acquired at street level in the urban area of Medellín to explore the potential for using a convolutional neural network (CNN) to automatically detect building materials and types of lateral-load resisting systems, which are attributes that define a building's structural typology (which is a key issue in exposure models for seismic risk assessment). The results of the developed model achieved a precision of 93% and a recall of 95% when identifying nonductile buildings, which are the buildings most likely to be damaged in an earthquake. Identifying fine-grained material typology is more difficult, because many visual clues are physically hidden, but our model matches expert level performances, achieving a recall of 85% and accuracy scores ranging from 60% to 82% on the three most common building typologies, which account for 91% of the total building population in Medellín. Overall, this study shows that a CNN can make a substantial contribution to developing cost-effective exposure models. © 2020 Elsevier LtdÍtem Book review: Emilio Chuvieco, Fundamentals of satellite remote sensing: An environmental approach. 2nd ed. Departamento de Economía y Finanzas; Research in Spatial Economics (RISE)Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to present a study on the antecedents of turnover intentions (TOI) of millennial Colombian employees. A theoretical model in which positive work-family interaction, professional respect (PR) and meaning predicted TOI is simultaneously tested in Millennials and Xers. Design/methodology/approach: The authors used a multigroup structural equation approach to analyze the data provided by 2,157 Millennials and 279 Xers. Participants work in 11 companies from five Colombian cities. City, age, sex, tenure and wage are included as control variables to respond to some limitations of previous research and isolate the effects of age cohorts. Findings: The results show differences in terms of some of the variables under study. Further, the effects of positive work-family interaction and PR on TOI were different from one age cohort to the other. The influence of meaning on the outcome variable was equal in Millennials and Xers but resulted positive. Research limitations/implications: The authors studied an under-researched population, used rigorous analytical procedures to simultaneously test the hypotheses across generations, analyzed data from a large sample size and control for confounding variables identified by researchers inquiring generational differences at the workplace. By these means, the study contributes to literature on millennial employees and age diversity. Originality/value: By studying an under-reseach population and using suitable analytical techniques, the study contributes to literature on millennial employees and age diversity. © 2019, Emerald Publishing Limited.Ítem Computational steering of CFD simulations using a grid computing environment(Springer-Verlag France, 2015-06-08) Garcia Ruiz, Manuel Julio; Duque, J, C.; BOULANGER, PIERRE; FIGUEROA, PABLO; Universidad EAFIT. Departamento de Economía y Finanzas; Research in Spatial Economics (RISE)In this paper, we present an efficiency improvement for the algorithm called AMOEBA, A Multidirectional Optimum Ecotope-Based Algorithm, devised by Aldstadt and Getis (Geogr Anal 38(4):327-343, 2006). AMOEBA embeds a local spatial autocorrelation statistic in an iterative procedure in order to identify spatial clusters (ecotopes) of related spatial units. We provide an analysis of the computational complexity of the original AMOEBA and develop an alternative formulation that reduces computational time without losing optimality. Departamento de Economía y Finanzas; Research in Spatial Economics (RISE)This paper uses a structured and consolidated approach to identify the most important factors, influencing the economic environment during the entrepreneurship. The econometric model produces statistically significant coefficients, establishing a meaningful positive relationship between the economic growth and entrepreneurship. In addition, we found a negative connection the both the real cost of capital and the employment with entrepreneurship. By combining the insights from our econometric exercise, we estimate a structural model, which allows us to identify the most important variables with respect to the entrepreneurship. Furthermore, we apply a structural model considering the economic environment, thereby presenting a unifying structure of the observed phenomenon. The robustness of our analysis is strengthened by various specifications and we observe that applying the suggested interventions defines an economic surrounding, that favors the entrepreneurship. © 2017.Ítem The creation of companies under a structural approach: An application case(Revista Espacios, 2017-01-01) Hurtado Rendón, A.; Velásquez, H.; Támara, A.; Universidad EAFIT. Departamento de Economía y Finanzas; Research in Spatial Economics (RISE)This study considers the effect that judicial and police efficiency exercised on crime in 25 of the 33 political-administrative divisions in Colombia during the period 2000-2011. Specifically, the study seeks to determine whether the reduction of crime was the result of increases in the cost of crime as a result of the strengthening of the country's security forces, especially the National Police, or instead was due to the greater efficiency of the penal system resulting from a structural change stemming from Act 906 of 2004. To view this we propose a model of dynamic panel data that not only includes the individual and temporal effects of the variables of interest, but also allows us to understand the inertia in criminal behavior. The results indicate an inverse relationship between the number of crimes and the greater efficiency of the police and judicial action, which is consistent with the evidence reported in other international work. Robustness checks confirmed the validity of the findings.
