Ítem 5G technology: Is it a determinant in the dispute for global economic hegemony between China and the United States in the 21st century?(Universidad EAFIT, 2021-12-17) Díaz González, Tania Anahí; González García, Juan; Licona Michel, Ángel; Universidad de Colima; Universidad de Colima; Universidad de ColombiaThe fifth generation (5G) technology is currently the latest manifestation of scientific and technological development in the world, which is impacting the economic, political, and international relations and the national and international security of countries. So far, China has led its implementation, which has lead it to acquire a relevant role in world governance to such an extent that it has given rise to a confrontation with the United States in the context of the dispute for global economic hegemony. The hypothesis of the text is that the progress made by China in 5G technology will be a catalyst for it to be positioned as the first global economic power. The article analyzes the characteristics of 5G technology and its importance in China and the world; it also reviews the race toward technological supremacy, recognizing the role of 5G in the key sectors of China’s economic positioning in the global economy, which will ultimately enable its rise and predominance in the direct battle with the United States.Ítem A collaborative tool for synchronous distance education(2004-01-01) Agudelo, A.; Escobar, L.; Restrepo, J.; Quiroz, A.; Trefftz, H.; Universidad EAFIT. Departamento de Ingeniería de Sistemas; I+D+I en Tecnologías de la Información y las ComunicacionesIn this paper we report results of the use of a telepresence application in a simulated distance education setting. The application combines video-conference with a networked virtual environment in which the instructor and the students can experiment with virtual object in a collaborative manner. The teaching for Understanding (TFU) framework is used as the pedagogical approach. Current preliminary results show that the combination of the telepresence application with TFU, can compensate for the lack of physical presence of the instructor in the classroom.Ítem Design and implementation of a low-cost projected virtual reality system to support learning processes(Springer Verlag, 2011-01-01) Gómez, R.; Trefftz, H.; Universidad EAFIT. Departamento de Ingeniería de Sistemas; I+D+I en Tecnologías de la Información y las ComunicacionesVirtual Reality technologies have been successfully incorporated into the learning processes and potential new applications in education are explored continuously. We found that one of the difficulties to popularize its use in the educational context, in countries with emerging and developing economies, is the cost of hardware required to generate satisfactory immersive experience. In this work we considered virtual reality from the perspective of human-computer interaction to support learning processes. The characteristics of low-cost projected virtual reality system (PVR) proposed, combines study and integration of available technology solutions, the development of an image synchronization routine that enables the use of a single video projector and the design of a printable pattern that preserve the state of polarization on the projection screen. © 2011 Springer-Verlag.Ítem An immersive virtual reality training system for mechanical assembly(2011-01-01) Peniche, A.; Diaz, C.; Trefftz, H.; Paramo, G.; Universidad EAFIT. Departamento de Ingeniería de Sistemas; I+D+I en Tecnologías de la Información y las ComunicacionesGiven the growing evolution of technology, machinery and manufacturing techniques, conventional methodologies for training the workforce are not enough for the current needs. Therefore methodologies capable to accelerate the training process and able to train the trainee in a wide range of scenarios are claimed for the industrial sector. Virtual reality offers an alternative that has been successfully implemented in other industries, and virtual reality based training systems have numerous advantages over the conventional methodologies, making it a very good option. Based on that premise, this paper explores the implementation of an immersive training system for mechanical assembly based on virtual reality for improving the training process. This system was proved to be as effective as the conventional methodology.Ítem Incomprendidos - Editorial Revista Universidad EAFIT Descubre y Crea Vol. 58 No. 179(Universidad EAFIT, 2024-08-23) Copete Villa, Antonio; Universidad EAFITÍtem Inventar es creer a ciegas en el futuro del mundo(Universidad EAFIT, 2024-08-23) Peña Guzmán, Stiver; Universidad EAFITÍtem Pensamientos poco artificiales(Universidad EAFIT, 2024-08-23) Querubín, Valeria; Universidad EAFITÍtem Por una transición energética responsable(Universidad EAFIT, 2023-03-27) Younes, Camilo; Universidad EAFITRetos y desafíos de la transición energética justa en Colombia a través de la apropiación social del conocimiento. Departamento de Ingeniería de Producción; Grupo en Tecnologías para la ProducciónRoyalties are income from rights given to the state for the extraction of non-renewable natural resources. In order to guarantee the equal distribution of these funds, Colombia created the General System of Royalties, which allocates 10% of these investments toward science, technology, and innovation programs considered a priority by each region. Carrying out royalty programs is complex due to the fact that each development phase requires that multiple actors be in agreement, including regional and city administrative offices, the academic sector, the private sector, the communities where the programs will be conducted, and the project evaluation and supervision entities, namely the National Planning Department and Colciencias as technical secretariat. Within this complex framework, we present the experience of EAFIT University in the design of a Project Management Office (PMO) model and the partial results of the implementation of two programs funded with royalties, which evidenced the need to structure a management model to coordinate programs requiring a higher level of follow-up and supervision, thus ensuring a responsible management of public resources under the private sector scheme where efficient and articulated communication channels were established amongst those interested and in accordance with their requirements. This model was adjusted based on the areas of knowledge and process groups proposed by the PMI.Ítem El reto de ser Distrito Especial de Ciencia, Tecnología e Innovación(Universidad EAFIT, 2023-03-27) Copete, Antonio; Guerrero, Tatiana; Universidad EAFITEl Distrito Especial de Ciencia, Tecnología e Innovación de Medellín implica grandes desafíos para la ciudad, que van desde nuevos diseños de gestión pública, fortalecimiento de alianzas público-privadas y herramientas de financiación, hasta hacer realidad un nuevo modelo de desarrollo basado en ciencia, tecnología e innovación, integral e incluyente, y con repercusiones de orden nacional.Ítem Simulating soft tissues using a GPU approach of the mass-spring model(2010-01-01) Leon, C.A.D.; Eliuk, S.; Gomez, H.T.; Universidad EAFIT. Departamento de Ingeniería de Sistemas; I+D+I en Tecnologías de la Información y las ComunicacionesThe recent advances in the fields such as modeling bio-mechanics of living tissues, haptic technologies, computational capacity, and graphics realism have created conditions necessary in order to develop effective surgical training using virtual environments. However, virtual simulators need to meet two requirements, they need to be real-time and highly realistic. The most expensive computational task in a surgical simulator is that of the physical model. The physical model is the component responsible to simulate the deformation of the anatomical structures and the most important factor in order to obtain realism. In this paper we present a novel approach to virtual surgery. The novelty comes in two forms: specifically a highly realistic mass-spring model, and a GPU based technique, and analysis, that provides a nearly 80x speedup over serial execution and 20x speedup over CPU based parallel execution. ©2010 IEEE.Ítem TECHNOLOGY AND THE COLOMBIAN FIQUE INDUSTRY: DRAWING FROM LATIN AMERICAN EXPERTISE, 1880-1938(Fondo Editorial Universidad EAFIT, 2018-06-29) Campuzano-Hoyos, JairoThis article examines the technological origins and changes of the Colombian fique (henequen) industry throughout the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It argues that the industry was established and reached significant levels of growth, in part due to the input of Colombian intellectuals, entrepreneurs, and scientists who examined global developments, disseminated useful knowledge, and sought to adapt suitable crops, practices, and technologies to Colombia's particular needs, settings, and social traits. These individuals looked mainly at Mexico. This history challenges the traditional assumption that Latin American countries generally developed a technological dependence on the North Atlantic nations. Mid-nineteenth-century Mexican inventions turned out to be particularly useful to Colombians seeking to foster small productive units in rural areas. The Colombian fique industry developed initially as "patrimonio de los pobres" ("heritage of the poor"). Attempts to introduce sophisticated, expensive technologies proved futile.Ítem Tecnologías para comprender lo que se filtra por la nariz(Universidad EAFIT, 2024-08-23) Montoya Correa, Jonathan; Arango Hurtado, Carolina; Universidad EAFITÍtem Understanding math concepts through computer-modeled virtual objects(SPRINGER, 2008-01-01) Trujillo, J.; Esteban, P.; Montoya, E.; Giraldo, R.; Montoya, A.; Mejía, J.; Trefftz, H.; Universidad EAFIT. Departamento de Ingeniería de Sistemas; I+D+I en Tecnologías de la Información y las ComunicacionesMany tools help GUI designers to produce prototypes of their future applications, but when this job requires the collaboration with geographically dispersed partners some problems arise like lack awareness of the others' work, concurrent manipulation of virtual objects and non-fluent communication of actions and intentions. We Sketch allows a small geographically distributed group to build GUI prototypes in a highly participative manner, keeping everyone aware of what is going on. A 3D virtual round table, virtual sheets simulating sketches, avatars representing users, an audio communication system and a shared view of sketches are the pieces that allow designers to discuss and co-design GUIs in real time offering a comfortable and pleasant experience. This paper describes the tool and the results of a set of experiments conducted in order to validate the hypothesis: "WeSketch allows a small group of designers who are geographically dispersed to be more efficient and feel more motivated during the GUI Sketching task than they do with current tools". © 2011 IEEE.
