The study was conducted in three stages: i) review of the academic literature, which allowed for the contextualization of key concepts related to corporate governance, continuity, and professionalization in family businesses; ii) data collection through fifteen semi-structured interviews in three third-generation and beyond Colombian family businesses, all with external general management. Five strategic roles were interviewed in each interview: manager, chair of the board of directors, family leader, senior shareholder, and next-generation shareholder; and iii) interpretive analysis of the findings, aimed at identifying patterns, tensions, and key lessons learned about the role of outside directors in this area. The study contributes to the field of corporate governance in family businesses and offers useful tools for entrepreneurs, managers, and consultants interested in the topic.Publicación Protocolo de familia como instrumento de autorregulación para empresas familiares(Universidad EAFIT, 2025) Tobón Alarcón, David Andrés; Nieto Nieto, Norma CeciliaThis document is centered on the study of an important auto regulatory mechanism for familiar enterprises known as family protocol. The analysis will be centered around concepts such as family enterprises and family protocol, the pertinent content of this instrument, the validity and oponibility of its dispositions, and the method of implementation of the protocol.
