The development of a differentiating strategy for the positioning of the northern region of Colombia’s department of Valle del Cauca as a producer of special coffees is based on the observed need to motivate production there, since this product is an important part of the means of subsistence of about 7000 families, even more so when the coffee sector marks the GDP of the agricultural sector of the country, but nevertheless presents great challenges when it comes to generating sufficient resources to provide for these families decent living conditions -- The following is a descriptive study that includes a qualitative analysis of the information collected both from written sources and from semi-structured interviews with seven experts from different areas of the coffee production and marketing chain -- From this study, some of the conclusions show the need to create inter-institutional alliances that allow access to financial services for producers, and contribute to improving the investment made for rural producers, so that the investment does not atomize, not only in its own terms, but in the strengthening of the capacities of producers through the improvement of the educational offer

(Universidad EAFIT, 2017) Fernández Gaviria, Laura; Díez Benjumea, Jhon Miguel
In 2015, the coffee sector in Colombia grew 20% in harvest. In addition, the world’s coffee consumption has increased along with the way it is consumed. Due to this, there are some trends that have appeared -- One of these trends is the Special coffee, whose clients are willing to pay a higher price per coffee and per its history -- Therefore, there is an opportunity in Colombia to produce a higher quantity of Special coffees since in 2015, it represented 24% of the coffee exports -- On the other hand, regular coffee continues to be the leader with 70% of the participation -- Currently, the small coffee farms are the ones that are attending the market of Special Coffees -- Consequently there’s an opportunity to start its production in big and medium farms in order to continue promoting the high quality of the coffee --However, in order to produce Special Coffees, it is required to have a higher quality in the harvest and postharvest processes, to be more strict in the selection of the grain and be more aware of the coffee plantation in order to have the best quality coffee -- As can be seen, the Project aims to formulate a Special coffee methodology in big and medium coffee farms in Andes, Antioquia through feasibility

This work analyzes, designs, and validates a business model aimed at the online marketing of specialty coffees grown in Colombia, promoting the implementation of practices that drive the environmental regeneration of local ecosystems and seek a better quality of life for both small coffee growers and all stakeholder groups involved in the value chain. For the purposes of analyzing the target market, New York City in the United States was selected, considering that it is one of the North American cities with the largest population of Colombian migrants and a well-established coffee consumption culture. For the development of the work, a study and compilation of the theoretical and conceptual foundations that have guided the evolution of the understanding of competitive strategy and the main methodological tools for its implementation were carried out. Based on the context analysis, the main determining factors for the business model design were identified, which were addressed through virtual workshops for iterative design, using the methodology and tool of the Flourishing Business Model Canvas (FBMC). As a result of the work, the proposed business model was validated, which is based on offering regenerative specialty coffee grown by small Colombian producers interested in implementing environmental regeneration actions enabled through medium-term sales contracts and prices linked to the international benchmark for the bean, to be transported, roasted, and packaged directly in New York City for online sales to HORECA sector clients and end consumers through a technological platform that, in addition to facilitating commercial transactions, allows the creation of a community interested in following the cultivation, harvesting, processing, and regeneration activities on each farm, as well as the possibility of pre-selling exclusive access coffee lots.
