In addition to this identification, the policies that each one applies in terms of ESG were mapped using the following public sources of information: management reports, reports and disclosures, sustainability reports and the Código País implementation report of Superintendencia Financiera de Colombia, among others. Lastly, banks were classified in ranges from highest to lowest compliance or adherence to ESG policies, and an analysis was made of the most profound factors that affect the adoption of ESG policies in the Colombian financial sector.Publicación Análisis de la rentabilidad y solidez del sistema financiero bancario en Colombia(Universidad EAFIT, 2024) Vélez Alzáte, Melina; Gallego Laverde, Andrea María; Téllez Falla, Diego FernandoIn this study, the main determinants of banking profitability, measured or represented through traditional indicators such as ROE (Retorn on Equity) and ROA (Retorn on Assets), are analyzed for the five most representative commercial banks in Colombia from January 2015 to December 2022. For this purpose, an econometric model is proposed using panel data methodology, which includes other financial indicators and macroeconomic variables to measure the sensitivity of these profitability indicators to changes in the economic cycle. Amidst these transformative shifts, open banking has emerged as a standout concept, bringing substantial changes in the way we engage with financial products. This research undertaking is fundamentally driven by the aspiration to delve into the essence of open banking, leveraging successful cases from other Latin American countries, such as Mexico and Brazil, as our primary units of observation. Through meticulous analysis of the open banking practices in these regions, we endeavor to envision how this technology could be introduced to Colombia.Further insights have been gleaned from statistical data on financial inclusion, furnished by diverse institutions, including the Financial Superintendence of Colombia and the World Bank. This information offers a window into the Colombian population's readiness to embrace digital transformation when it comes to their banking instruments. Colombia has faced these challenges with the help of public policy (Conpes 3424 de 2006; Conpes, 2006) that established the roadmap to make financial inclusion a reality on the short term. However, the small amount of public´s faith in traditional banks, high transaction costs, people´s disinterest in welcoming new banking technologies and a lack of strong physical presence along the country of retail banks; have driven low-income potential customers to interact with non-traditional banking institutions that have created targeted credit loans and loyalty plans in order to attract this part of the population. In the interest of proposing new ways of issuing credit and retail banking solutions, this thesis aims to determine the credit flow for digital lending that can meet the demand of those who require financing but do not have the knowledge to either create it or optimize it. It describes the current state of things for the banking industry in Colombia, analyzing market actors who have opted to develop and consume non-traditional lending products as a tool to achieve financial inclusiveness through targeted consumer and retail loans. Said that, there is absolutely necessary a score that speeds up the loan approval process, and makes the loan granting less expensive while estimating the risk of each client from the beginning. In the preparation of this work, there was information from a microfinance entity, which at the cut of Dec / 17 presented 469,996 clients of the microcredit modality, with which it is expected to obtain a representative sample with 50% of clients with debt past due over 30 days and 50% of customers with lower past due. In this sense, quantitative methodologies with secondary data were used, and through econometric models (Logistic Model and Discriminant Analysis), as well as the knowledge of the researchers to determine the variables of greatest significance, estimates and projections were made in which probable financial benefit of having a score for granting the loan was evidenced. Consequently, this document is expected to contribute to the further development of microfinance in Colombia through the new digital models of credit granting and risk rating.Publicación Efectos de la implementación de buenas prácticas de gobierno corporativo en la rentabilidad del sector bancario colombiano(Universidad EAFIT, 2024) Sánchez Núñez, María Isabel; Gaitán Riaño, Sandra Constanza; Téllez Falla, Diego FernandoIn this research work, the effects of the implementation of good corporate governance practices in 24 Colombian banks in the period 2015-2019 were identified using panel econometric models in order to analyze the relationship between these practices and ROE, net interest margin, leverage multiplier and asset turnover. The positive and significant impact on the leverage multiplier and asset turnover was found, as well as the negative relationship between net interest margin and ROE in relation to good corporate governance practices. The more efficient and advanced it is, the more it contributes to the growth of society. In recent years, the sustainability trend has gained relevance in the banking sector, even many Banks have changed their growth strategies in order to obtain profitability and provide social, ethical and environmental value. The objective of this study is to determine, through the DEA methodology, that sustainable Banks can archive higher retuns compared to Banks that do not have sustainability as a priority. For this, data from fifteen comercial Banks of Latinamerica between 2014 and 2018 were taken as a sample. The results show that there is no positive correlation between efficiency and sustainability. Despite of the outstanding fulfill with the indicators established by the industry, this was not enough to stand the pressures freed by the market conditions and it took several financial institutions to extreme situations. This difficulties conceded room for reforms by The Basel Committee (Bank for International Settlements, s.f.), with the target of reinforce the guidelines that the financial institutions must adopt in order to have bigger capability to face future financial markets crisis.
