Cuidar el territorio para hacer la paz: protección de la bioculturalidad en la Zona de Reserva Campesina de San José de Apartadó

In Colombia, the armed conflict has had profound effects on campesino ways of life. The victimization of entire families and communities has eroded and, at times, disrupted the practices, knowledge systems, and forms of organization that underpin their internal relationships and their connection with nature. In this context, Campesino Reserve Zones (Zonas de Reserva Campesina, ZRCs) have become one of the main legal instruments available to campesino communities for addressing the structural causes of the conflict and advancing their rights. However, the State’s traditional interpretation of the ZRC legal framework has faced limitations in protecting campesino bioculturality—that is, the relationship campesino communities have established with their territory. Against this backdrop, this research examines a particular case: the process of establishing the San José de Apartadó ZRC, located in the Urabá region of Antioquia, with the aim of understanding its interconnections with campesino bioculturality and the opportunities it offers for building environmental peace at the community level. To this end, the study adopts a qualitative and participatory methodology grounded in dialogue among knowledge systems and transdisciplinary dialogue. The findings indicate that campesino communities in San José de Apartadó have appropriated the ZRC as a means of comprehensively protecting their relationship with the territory and repairing the harm that the armed conflict has inflicted upon it. In this process, the campesino interpretation of this legal instrument raises important questions regarding issues such as environmental participation and territorial planning.
