Mechatronics has been a reference for synergetic integration of technology. However, synergy is obtained not only from technical issues, but through professional skills. Nevertheless, traditional education and industry standards focus only on the technical side. The study case is performed within the program Integrated Design of Technical Systems by implementing strategies such as integrated scheduling, integrated assessment and project proposal with application fields such as agriculture, robotics, health and mobility. This approach does not require additional credits for a project course, since the project lies underneath the courses. It has led to an increase of enrollment of students, which is significant during times when less engineers opt for further technical education. © 2018 IEEE.Ítem Academic synergy through integrated mechatronic projects(IEEE, 2018-01-01) Velasquez-Lopez, Alejandro; Rodriguez-Garcia, AlbertoThis Innovative to Practice Work in Progress paper presents an approach to obtain synergy by implementing an integrated mechatronic project within a postgraduate program. Departamento de Ingeniería de Diseño; Ingeniería de Diseño (GRID)The acoustic absorption of open-cell polyolefin (PO) foams with densities between 23 and 64 kg/m3 has been measured and compared with that of open-cell polyurethane (PU) foams. Acoustic parameters related to the cellular structure, such as porosity, tortuosity and airflow resistivity, were also measured. PO foams show higher tortuosity and airflow resistivity than the PU open-cell foam; as a consequence, they show a higher absorption coefficient than PU open-cell foam in the frequency range between 1000 and 2000 Hz. We also modeled the acoustic behavior using the Biot-Allard theory with the Johnson approach, fitted using a genetic algorithm. The fits of the acoustic absorption coefficient as a function of frequency were reasonably consistent with the experimental results. © 2014 Elsevier B.V.Ítem Acoustic displacement tetrahedra developed using the IET rules(PERGAMON-ELSEVIER SCIENCE LTD, 2010-09-01) Correa, S.; Militello, C.; Recuero, M.; Universidad EAFIT. Departamento de Ingeniería de Diseño; Ingeniería de Diseño (GRID)A four node, displacement based, acoustic element is developed. In order to avoid spurious rotational modes, a higher order stiffness is introduced. The higher order stiffness is developed from an incompatible strain field which computes element volume changes under nodal rotational displacements fields. The higher order strain satisfies the IET requirements, non affecting convergence. The higher order stiffness is modulated, element by element, with a factor. Thus, the displacement based formulation is capable of placing the spurious rotational modes over the range of physical compressional modes that can be accurately captured by the mesh. © 2010 Elsevier Ltd. Consequently, this paper attempts to put in evidence the potential applications of Head-Up (Display (HUD) and Head-Down Display (HDD) systems in automotive vehicles, showing applications and trends under study. In general, automotive advances related to AR devices suggest the partial integration of the HUD and HDD in automobiles; however, the right way to do it is still a moot point. © 2014 SPIE.Ítem Aerodynamic effects of manufacturing tolerances on a solar car(Springer Science and Business Media Deutschland GmbH, 2017-01-01) Betancur, E.; Fragassa, C.; Coy, J.; Hincapie, S.; Osorio-Gómez, G.In the case of solar vehicles, since the primary necessity is to optimise the energy efficiency during motion, many efforts are addressed by designers in searching the perfect aerodynamics. It means, in particular, the minimization of the drag force at cruising speeds and an elaborated vehicle’s Computer-Aided Design (CAD) are the principal result of this activity. Despite, these efforts can be nullified by geometrical tolerances emerging from manufacturing. In this paper, the effects of tolerances introduced by composite manufacturing processes are investigated combining 3D scanning technology and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). After the solar car manufacturing, a reverse engineering process is executed with the aim to scan the vehicle’s body and compare it to the initial theoretical design. Geometric deviations are found and their aerodynamic consequences are evaluated in terms of aerodynamic losses. © Springer International Publishing AG 2017.Ítem The Aesthetic Pleasure in Design Scale for Spanish Speaking Countries: A Method for the Cross-Cultural Implementation and Adaptation of Psychometric Scales(SPRINGER, 2019-01-01) Garrido-Possauner L.M.; Maya J.One of the main issues in the field of product aesthetics is the lack of consistency in the instruments and terms being used to assess it. Several scales have been used but with restricted validity and reliability; notwithstanding, the APID (Aesthetic Pleasure In Design) scale developed in English, as part of the UMA (Unified Model of Aesthetics) project, lacks these limitations. Our research, being in a Spanish speaking country, required the scale to be in Spanish to be comprised and applied to domestic respondents. The adaptation of psychometric instruments with conceptual and linguistic challenging constructs, often is difficult, as the items used to assess the construct do not always have a direct translation. Also, it is possible for the adapted version to require different items that were not considered in the original instrument in order to preserve the content’s equivalence according to the target culture. A qualitative-quantitative mixed approach is proposed in order to overcome these issues. The resulting instrument has been statistically tested, proving to be both valid and reliable for the measurement of aesthetic pleasure in design. The final scale consists of five items: bonito, hermoso, agradable, llamativo and me gusta. This paper aims to improve the understanding of how aesthetic pleasure is perceived and therefore expressed by the local respondents gaining insight into how this construct is mentally represented and categorized by the respondents. It also aims to illustrate how psychometric scales based on respondents’ vocabulary have a great potential as usability assessment instruments. © 2019, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.Ítem AIR-MODELLING: A tool for gesture-based solid modelling in context during early design stages in AR environments(ELSEVIER SCIENCE BV, 2015-01-01) Arroyave-Tobon, Santiago; Osorio-Gomez, Gilberto; Cardona-McCormick, Juan F.; Universidad EAFIT. Departamento de Ingeniería de Diseño; Ingeniería de Diseño (GRID)Augmented reality (AR) technologies are just being used as interface in CAD tools allowing the user to perceive 3D models over a real environment. The influence of the use of AR in the conceptualization of products whose configuration, shape and dimensions depend mainly on the context remains unexplored. We aimed to prove that modelling in AR environments allows to use the context in real-time as an information input for making the iterative design process more efficient. In order to prove that, we developed a tool called AIR-MODELLING in which the designer is able to create virtual conceptual products by hand gestures meanwhile he/she is interacting directly with the real scenario. We conducted a test for comparing designers' performance using AIR-MODELLING and a traditional CAD system. We obtained an average reduction of 44% on the modeling time in 76% of the cases. We found that modelling in AR environments using the hands as interface allows the designer to quickly and efficiently conceptualize potential solutions using the spatial restrictions of the context as an information input in real-time. Additionally, modelling in a natural scale, directly over the real scene, prevents the designer from drawing his/her attention on dimensional details and allows him/her to focus on the product itself and its relation with the environment. © 2014 Elsevier B.V. Departamento de Ingeniería de Diseño; Ingeniería de Diseño (GRID)The shape of a wind turbine blade plays a critical role in the efficiency and robustness of energy production. In particular, the Wavy Leading Edge is a morphology that can be implemented in the blades to improve the operating range in unsteady conditions. The best performance is achieved by fine-tuning the blade geometry to the specific context. An aerodynamic exploration of these kinds of morphologies implies generating and evaluating design iterations. Accordingly, this work presents the development of the generative tool Albatros Create ®. Through interactive visualization, infographics, and centralized parameterization, its goal is to support the geometrical definition of the aerodynamic surfaces of horizontal-axis turbines with or without a wavy leading edge. New airfoil profiles can be created, and 3D models of the rotors designed can be automatically generated. The software was implemented in the design of two rotors which were then recreated in a benchmarking analysis with four other softwares. None of the four managed to generate the smooth surfaces in fully-editable models that were achieved with Albatros Create. This work aims at empowering the research community with a user-friendly tool for exploring rotor designs through virtual prototypes. This can help to integrate further the design, modeling, and optimization stages, addressing a wider audience and facilitating the implementation of Wavy Leading Edge morphologies. © 2020, Springer-Verlag France SAS, part of Springer Nature.Ítem Análisis comparativo de políticas de diseño en Europa: Clasificación y visualización de estrategias(Universidad de Caldas, 2017-01-01) González C.G.; López M.L.; Hernández M.C.; Universidad EAFIT. Departamento de Ingeniería de Diseño; Ingeniería de Diseño (GRID)This analysis is part of the doctoral thesis project "The Design System in the Mediterranean Arc Euroregion: priorities for the characterization of a strategic model". Its purpose is to make a comparison between different design policies in Europe. This study started with a bibliographical review on the implementation of policies for strategic design in different countries and regions of Europe, as well as the analysis of competitiveness corporate ladder, competitiveness in design, innovation performance, etc. Because of these analyses, five countries and one region were selected: United Kingdom, Finland, Denmark, Norway, Estonia and Flanders. Information coding was conducted following the grounded theory research. Segments of analysis in the literature review, which were not preconceived prior to the initiation of this investigation, were identified and grouped into categories. Subsequently, matrix analyses and relationship networks or concept maps were used to visually demonstrate and compare the strategies that make up the design policies in each country/region. In addition, a relationship between competitiveness corporate ladder, growth of competitiveness and performance in innovation with the maps of the strategies could be established. The countries in the top 15 of the different rankings are those that have a higher chromatic brand because they have a higher number of strategies that promote design as a strategy. This comparative analysis can be used in different types of design policies of any territory in order to carry out an initial detection of existing strategies and to know the complexity of a specific design policy.Ítem Analysis of relevant variables to monitor a photovoltaic charging station through the Function to Data Matrix (FDM) method(Institution of Engineering and Technology, 2018-01-01) Cárdenas-Gómez I.; Fernández-Montoya M.; Mejía-Gutiérrez R.The growth of the electric vehicle industry has brought the development of charging stations and the need for good performance of such systems. The large amount of information that can be monitored in these systems can represent a problem for a good operation in terms of control, computational cost and time. For this reason, it is necessary to make a selection of variables that allows to decrease the data-set’s size without compromising the quality of information, needed for a proper information management system. There are several methods for prioritizing variables, such as the Function to Data Matrix (FDM). This method takes into account the functional analysis of the system, as well as the operative states and their relationship with the basic functions and variables. This enables to obtain a Variable Relevance Indicator (VRI) to define which variables have a higher importance under a particular perspective based on the main function of a system. This article presents the process of analyzing a photovoltaic charging station through the FDM method in order to define the most relevant information to be deployed in a future remote monitoring system. © 2018 Institution of Engineering and Technology. Departamento de Ingeniería de Diseño; Ingeniería de Diseño (GRID)Objective: To determine the effects of occlusion on maximum bite force of growing subjects. Materials and Methods: Incisor and first molar bite force of children and adolescents was evaluated. Four cohorts were measured annually for 3 years, starting at approximately 7, 9, 12, and 15 years of age, respectively. The initial sample included 182 females and 198 males; there were 130 subjects with normal occlusion, 111 with Class I malocclusion, and 139 with Class II malocclusion. Multilevel analyses were performed to model the growth changes and compare groups. Results: Maximum bite force increased significantly (P < .05) over time. Incisal forces peaked at 14.3 and 15.3 years of age for females and males, respectively. Maximum molar bite force peaked at 16 years for both males and females. Subjects with normal occlusion had significantly higher bite force than subjects with malocclusion. Maximum molar bite force exhibited a significant testing effect, with forces increasing 2.6 kg each year that the tests were repeated. Conclusions: Malocclusion has a detrimental effect on bite force. Changes in maximum bite force are also due to age, sex, and repeated testing.Ítem Assembly planning with automated retrieval of assembly sequences from CAD model information(EMERALD GROUP PUBLISHING LIMITED, 2012-01-01) Vigano, Roberto; Osorio Gomez, Gilberto; Universidad EAFIT. Departamento de Ingeniería de Diseño; Ingeniería de Diseño (GRID)Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to define an approach to extract the liaison graph from a 3D CAD model and analyze a method to find at least a feasible assembly sequence for the product. The method could be useful to search the optimal sequence of assembling for a product, by comparing different sequences extracted in automatic mode from a 3D CAD model. Design/methodology/ approach - The method proposed analyzes the liaison graph extracted, in order to obtain the possible assembly sequences for the product under study. The extraction of the sequences is based on some attributes and parameters of the graph. Findings - By means of the method proposed it is possible to obtain in automatic mode the liaison graph of an assembly 3D CAD model. Moreover, the study of the graph obtained allows the definition of all the assembly sequences for the product. Finally, it is possible to analyse the sequences found to select the optimal sequence. Research limitations/implications - The major limitation of the approach is, actually, the great number of impossible sequences that are extracted. For this, a little intervention by the user is required. Practical implications - The application of the method allows the manufacturer to analyze and study the optimal assembly sequence without the direct use of a CAD system. The approach could be used at the early stage of the design process and by means of the database of the PDM/PLM systems. Originality/value - The approach proposed in the paper is an original method to extract a liaison graph from a 3D CAD model. The approach to extract the assembly sequences was compared with other methods and good results have been obtained. © Emerald Group Publishing Limited.Ítem Assembly sequences definition through hierarchical subassembly approach(DELFT UNIV TECHNOLOGY, FAC INDUST DESIGN ENG, 2010-01-01) Gómez, G.O.; Viganò, R.Design processes are leading to the reduction of product development time and costs. This trend applies to the evaluation of function, architecture and high level information as far as possible at early stages of product design in order to allow the designer to compare radically different solutions rather than proceeding with fine tuning of a single option. Specifically, design of assembly processes requires information regarding neighborhood, interfaces and interactions between product components from product architecture definition stage, difficult to reach at early stages of design. Besides, assembly process concerns human interaction which is considered in a subjective way when it is analyzed as a design parameter, enterprise-specific conditions, and many suppositions derived from queries of skilled staff. So, an automated tool working with general abstract information available at early stages of design could be able to present more realistic behavior against methodologies with specific hypotheses and rules. In this work an automated method to find feasible assembly sequences without human intervention, in contrast with several solutions presented by different authors, is proposed. The developed method starts with the acquisition and evaluation of topological information of interaction between components of a discrete mechanical product at the early stages of concept and embodiment design [16], followed by the identification and hierarchical classification of independent minimum level subassemblies until the completion of the assembly procedure of the system obtaining at least one feasible assembly sequence. In this way an automated tool which yields a finite discrete number of feasible assembly sequences from all possible assembly solutions, is presented. © Organizing Committee of TMCE 2010 Symposium.Ítem ASSESSING LINE, PROPORTION, PRECISION AND PERSPECTIVE IN TRADITIONAL DRAWING METHOD AND DIGITAL PEN BASED TECHNOLOGY FOR FAMILIARIZED SUBJECT(2016-11-14) Garcia, J.A.This USB Flash drive includes all presented papers at ICERI2016 conference. A digital drawing classroom with 20 Wacom Cintiq digital drawing tablets was implemented in the Product Design Engineering Undergraduate Program at EAFIT University. One of the purposes of this classroom was to improve the students' sketching skills, due to the lack of ability that was been detected by the drawing teachers throughout the Program. Digital freehand drawing software promise several advantages to achieve high quality sketches, nevertheless, a year and a half after this technology was in use, significant improvements in drawing skills were not seen, despite the students' training with the digital tablets and their software. Many of them preferred to continue using pencil and paper rather than digital drawing tablets because, they argued, that they had better results with the traditional method. According to this, a qualitative study was made to try to assess these problems, by comparing freehand drawing with traditional pencil and paper (analog) against digital drawing tablets. Four main variables fundamental for a correct drawing in product design were assessed: line, proportion, precision and perspective. The nine studied subjects were chosen following these criteria: medium-high drawing grades, and at least six months of experience in digital drawing with tablets. Results obtained show the students unsure about the use of digital tablets, and it's evident in drawing quality obtained in both methods, when traditional drawing shows better scores. Students still prefer to draw using pencil and paper and then, to use the drawing tablets for detailing, colouring and finishing their sketches. The students recognize though the importance of adopting new technologies in their design process.
