(Universidad EAFIT, 2021) Gaviria Velásquez, Yesenia; Monsalve Restrepo, María Isabel; Arias Salazar, Alejandro; Uribe de Correa, Beatriz Amparo
The MSMEs in Colombia represent 35% of GDP, 80% of employment and 90% of the productive sector. As a result of the digital revolution, e-commerce represents a key resource for Colombian MSMEs, which provides advantages such as the expansion of the offer, interactivity and the immediacy of the purchase and the crossing of borders. Likewise, the adoption of sustainable consumption and production patterns is more and more important in the world. However, to turn e-commerce into a truly profitable sales channel, digital capabilities are required that will permeate and define all phases of e-commerce: planning, implementation, and demand generation. Therefore, the objective of this work was to analyze the implementation of e-commerce in MSMEs marketers of sustainable food, beverages, and cleaning products in the Valle de Aburrá. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with five companies that commercialize sustainable products, which were selected by non-probability sampling for convenience from four databases. It was found that most companies plan their digital strategies by a specialized work team that also analyzes the data of their digital channels and clients and carries out recruitment and loyalty campaigns. All companies have a website and social networks, but not all of them allow to purchase online. However, those companies that also have a physical channel, their digital channels do not represent the main sales channel.

This research analyzes the connection between small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and the Payment for Ecosystem Services (PES) scheme to promote actions that reduce the impact of human activities. Through the voluntary compensation provided by these companies, the establishment of links with farming communities has been facilitated, where forest conservation is regarded as a cultural activity that also generates income and improves the living conditions of those who protect these ecosystems, which are crucial for regulating water quality and supply. Local management models are identified that contribute to the consolidation and sustainability of payments to the communities that protect these essential resources, while simultaneously preserving farming culture and its practices for forest protection and ecosystem conservation. In this context, the involved companies have implemented an organizational management model that incorporates styles and characteristics aimed at promoting equity toward rural communities as a mechanism of sustainability, integrating it within management practices focused on improving both environmental conditions and the quality of life for farming families who depend on forests and productive systems. This model, driven by SMEs, has enabled the implementation of PES in the areas influenced by their projects by analyzing various environmental, social, and economic structures as a strategy for sustainability and a planning tool, adding significant value to their products, broadening the spectrum of profitability, and benefiting the products and services that these organizations provide.

(Universidad EAFIT, 2006-08-15) Barriga Manrique, Enrique

This article presents empirical evidence on the effect of operating and financial conditions on the cash conversion cycle (CCE) of Colombian companies that are not listed on the stock exchange for the period 1995 to 2019. The results, which are robust in the presence of From the unobserved heterogeneity at the firm level, it shows that operating margin, size, and level of leverage encourage companies to seek more conservative working capital strategies. In contrast, companies with higher sales growth, reduced free cash flow, high return on assets, and higher investment in tangible fixed assets have a more aggressive working capital policy. Companies that have a more conservative CCE have a lower indicator of coverage of their current liabilities with cash (super acid test). On the other hand, although there is a statistically positive relationship between volatility and CCE, the significance is heterogeneous over time. In addition, when companies present reduced cash flow and negative sales growth, the greater is their probability of financial difficulty even with a conservative CCE

The main objective of this field work was to develop a model that allows building projections, monitoring and control of cash flow in SMEs in the manufacturing, trading and services sectors, being tested in companies that are currently clients of Covalentte SAS, a company dedicated to providing accounting, tax, and legal advisory services to organizations with different business activities. To develop the model, the financial statements, accounting information, indicators and cash flow structure of the companies under study were analysed, in order to incorporate quantitative forecasting methods based on time series to predict future results in the short and medium term, as well as simulation for decision making. Finally, it was possible to test the model in 15 companies from different sectors which, through the execution of a survey, allowed validating the level of acceptance of the process, being the service companies those who gave it a better valuation because their sales, which in most cases are cash and do not incorporate the inventory component in their working capital structure, simplify with it their cash flow management, allowing informed decition maling by the companies managers.

This research analyzes the effects of biases associated with behavioral finance on exchange rate risk management in SMEs companies in the Colombian real sector. Although behavioral finance has been widely studied in the investment field, it is relevant to analyze its impact on hedging decisions to anticipate and mitigate exchange rate risk. To this end, a survey was applied to thirty SMEs and thirty risk managers of financial institutions, in order to examine the intersection between the literature on behavioral finance and the decision-making process for managing the exchange rate risk of these firms. The results reveal the prevalence of cognitive biases in this process, suggesting the necessity to present strategies and recommendations to mitigate them.

(Universidad EAFIT, 2012) Reyes Sarmiento, Martha Eugenia; Cardona Acevedo, Marleny
Preludio ...

Currently, the financing gaps in Colombian SMEs generate an opportunity to unite the SME market with private capital structures. This degree project proposes this financing alternative, based on a study of supply (financing alternatives) and demand (Database with 45,284 Colombian SMEs). Establishing themselves as Private equity funds (PE funds), they serve as an investment vehicle and business support tool, for the financing of companies or productive projects that are not listed on the stock exchange and that are in the expansion and consolidation stage.

(Universidad EAFIT, 2020) Herrera Monsalve, Federico; Hoyos Quintero, Elizabeth; Gaspar Medina , Daniel Santiago
This work linearizes the functions for current loans, investment, liquidity, and liquid assets (Love, 2000), finding the possible effects on the marginal productivity of capital, reflected in the access to credit in the financial system of small companies and medium-sized companies in Colombia in the 2018-2019 period, performing an econometric data panel exercise, in which regression of four models was made, where the results show among things that an increase of 1% in loans, marginal productivity increases by 0.07%. In this way, it is possible to detect that loans have a positive and significant relationship with marginal productivity.

(Universidad EAFIT, 2024) Molina Gallardo, Jorge Mauricio; Velasco Betancourt, Joe Raphael; Trujillo Peñaranda, Camilo Andrés; Betancur Hurtado, Carlos Mario
This research characterizes the business ethical risks to which smes in Valle del Cauca are exposed in a highly competitive market. The methodology has had a mixed and descriptive approach, based on documentary analysis and implementation of an interview. The results have shown that the ethical risks with the greatest presence in the organizational field are established through administrative corruption and bribery to obtain private benefits, illegal collection of economic resources, fraudulent hiring of personnel, non-compliance with the conditions regarding the quality of goods and services, alteration of accounting information and personal data of clients, among others. It should be noted that this series of situations compromises the stability of the SME with an impact on the reputational aspects of the company, withdrawal of products or services offered by the company due to non-compliance with quality standards, effects on the stability and productive efficiency of the company and legal actions by Stakeholders. In this sense, a management process has been established that allows evaluating the level of maturity in the face of business ethical risks by smes in Valle del Cauca, based on a series of definitions that configure the risk, determination of criteria for probability measurement, impact, heat map, control, warning signs and matrix for ethical risk assessment.

This work evaluates crowdfunding as a source of alternative funding for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) that develop energy efficiency and renewable energy projects by identifying the best international practices and contrasting them to Colombian’s regulation and implementation. In order to define the viability of this financing structure, it is developed a case study of a solar photovoltaic project through performing a sensitivity analysis of different scenarios. In the following chapters, the Colombian energy market, the typology of green projects, the current contracting, operating and financing scheme for energy services companies are described in order to contextualize the technical and financial aspects of crowdfunding. In addition, the features of the Fintech ecosystem and the crowdfunding segment are also explained, analyzing the market conditions, the main international stakeholders and the degree of advance in the Colombian financing system. Finally, in order to link all the above-mentioned concepts, the gaps under the current Colombian energy market conditions are described according to the current regulation of the collaborative financing system (Law 1357, 2018). This allows proposing alternative solutions and opportunities to enable the participation of ESCOs in the Fintech ecosystem and the development of green projects and their financial sustainability.
