$2.6BN marriage of Ebay and Skype ended in divorce
(Universidad EAFIT, 2019) Zuluaga Arbeláez, Juan Sebastián; Gaitán Riaño, Sandra Constanza
eBay acquired Skype for $2.6 billion in 2005, which was a very high price compared to Skypes revenues of only $7 million. The acquisition was meant to boost eBay’s revenues, by making it more convenient for buyers and sellers to communicate on the auction platform. Shared benefits were seen to increase the number of users for Skype and enhance the features available for eBay users within its platform. Unfortunately for eBay, their customers did not find any use for Skype’s technology, which was initially intended to connect sellers and buyers quicker and make communication easier. After years of trying, the acquisition led to a write-down of the value of Skype in eBay’s books and finally (and luckily for eBay) led to a sale to Microsoft. Microsoft acquired Skype and created its division within the company that reported directly to Microsoft’s CEO. The company has adopted a passive stance to materialize the synergies while being conservative of Skype strategy, brand, and user experience. Different independent sources categorize this deal as a success. Our analysis highlights the approach Microsoft took for the governance of the collaboration and how it was adapted to the sources of potential joint value and the major capabilities of Skype business model and competitive position.

Cámaras IP: monitoreo virtual de proyectos de construcción
(Universidad EAFIT, 2014) Acevedo Pino, Camilo Enrique; Botero Botero, Luis Fernando

Competition policies for the internet market in Colombia: Impact on entrepreneurship
(Academic Conferences and Publishing International Limited, 2019-01-01) Osorio A.M.; Rendón J.J.G.; Osorio A.M.; Rendón J.J.G.; Universidad EAFIT. Departamento de Economía y Finanzas; Estudios en Economía y Empresa (GEE)
The internet is one of the most important services worldwide, its use and increase in coverage are between the main concerns of development agendas. These markets tend to be highly concentrated, and competition policies have few tools to differentiate between companies with market power or possible abuse of it. The development, innovation, and research in the technology and telecommunications sector is growing and is promoted by the government. There are many entrepreneurs that need broadband for their business; that is the main reason for studying this sector. In Colombia, the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) made recommendations for the telecommunications market, including the Internet, to improve not only the indicators but also the policies. The competition policies for the internet market in Colombia generate an impact on consumers and of course on entrepreneurship. The competition policy is made for the companies that have direct contact with the final consumer, so the wholesaler can manage different prices and practices that can affect the final consumer but there is not a clear policy for them. The aim is to analyze the Internet market in Colombia between 2010 and 2015 in a theoretical and empirical way, what is the impact of vertical integration on companies, competition policies and especially in the entrepreneurship. In Colombia, 75% of the population lives in the urban area. According to data from the OECD, the gap in the use of information and communication technology (ICT) in large and small companies is high, only 20% of small medium enterprises (SMEs) are connected to the internet; this figure is low, given that 96.4% of companies in Colombia are microenterprises. The competition policy for the internet sector in Colombia is focused on regulating the retail market, which has direct contact with the end users of the service. It is common to hear that the superintendence of commerce, industry, and tourism has sanctioned an enterprise, but they still have a lot to do in the regulation of the wholesale market of the internet. The concentration of the internet market in Colombia has a clear impact in all the entrepreneurship because, compared with other countries, in Colombia is more expensive to work with internet so, this has an impact in innovation, research, and competition. © Proceedings of the 14th European Conference on Innovation and Entrepreneurship, ECIE 2019. Demanda de Internet: El sector mayorista de telecomunicaciones Colombiano
    (Universidad EAFIT, 2016-03-28) García, John J.; Posada, Juan P.; jgarcia@eafit.edu.co; jposad28@eafit.edu.co

A domain-specific modeling framework for attack surface modeling
(SciTePress, 2020-01-01) Sun, T.N.; Drouot, B.; Golra, F.R.; Champeau, J.; Guerin, S.; Le Roux, L.; Mazo, R.; Teodorov, C.; Van Aertryck, L.; L'Hostis, B.; Universidad EAFIT. Departamento de Ingeniería de Sistemas; I+D+I en Tecnologías de la Información y las Comunicaciones
Cybersecurity is becoming vital as industries are gradually moving from automating physical processes to a higher level automation using cyber physical systems (CPS) and internet of things (IoT). In this context, security is becoming a continuous process that runs in parallel to other processes during the complete life cycle of a system. Traditional threat analysis methods use design models alongside threat models as an input for security analysis, hence missing the life-cycle-based dynamicity required by the security concern. In this paper, we argue for an attacker-aware systems modeling language that exposes the systems attack surfaces. For this purpose, we have designed Pimca, a domain specific modeling language geared towards capturing the attacker point of view of the system. This study introduces the formalism along with the Pimca workbench, a framework designed to ease the development and manipulation of the Pimca models. Finally, we present two relevant use cases, serving as a preliminary validation of our approach. © Copyright 2020 by SCITEPRESS - Science and Technology Publications, Lda. All rights reserved.

Handling heterogeneity in networked virtual environments
(MIT PRESS, 2003-02-01) Trefftz, H; Marsic, I; Zyda, M; Universidad EAFIT. Departamento de Ingeniería de Sistemas; I+D+I en Tecnologías de la Información y las Comunicaciones
The availability of inexpensive and powerful graphics cards as well as fast Internet connections make networked virtual environments viable for millions of users and many new applications. It is therefore necessary to cope with the growing heterogeneity that arises from differences in computing power, network speed, and users' preferences. This paper describes an architecture that accommodates the heterogeneity while allowing a manager to define systemwide policies. One of the main objectives of our scheme is to allow slower nodes to participate in the session by preventing fast nodes from flooding slow nodes with too many messages. Policies and users' preferences can be expressed as simple linear equations forming a model that describes the system as a whole as well as its individual components. When solutions to this model are mapped back to the problem domain, viable solutions that accommodate heterogeneity and system policies are obtained. For example, slower nodes may receive less frequent updates than faster ones for one or several information streams. The results of our experiments with a proof-of-concept system are described.

This work is inspired by the seven-year work experience in the retail sector, specifically in non-contact channels, which has evidenced the evolution and penetration of the ecommerce channel in Colombia, which has grown from 2013 to 2017 of 231% in sales and had a participation in transactions until 2018 of 4.4% (BlackSip, 2018). It seeks to answer the question about purchase motivators regarding the ecommerce channel. The study aims to answer five hypotheses that were formulated in the literature review on the subject. Data collection was achieved by applying a questionnaire to men and women between the ages of 25 and 40, residents of the city of Medellin, buyers of the online channel. Among the important results it is highlighted that it is confirmed that the fact that people can enter from anywhere with internet access at any time is a motivator, also having a broader portfolio than a physical store and more depth in their inventory allows The user considers the online channel in their purchases and the perception of lower prices allows the user to consider the online channel as a channel to make their purchases. As a barrier it was found that people prefer to touch a product before making a purchase, which is not so easy to achieve when it is sold through the online channel, the results allow us to infer that we must work on the potential barriers to achieve the closure of Online transactions

This document shows the motivators and inhibitors that drive or inhibit Bogotanians to materialize a purchase through online channels of agricultural products, specifically fruits and vegetables. Taking into account that; for this category, there is limited information for decision makers shopping through online channels. Quantitative exploration is considered timely through surveys applied to 427 Bogotanians belonging to economic strata 2 to 6. Based on the need to promote new strategies; such as mass digital channels, diversify them, and open new media in the marketing of agricultural foods. Food purchases supported by new technologies; allow exploring the opportunities of electronic commerce focused on agriculture, to massify the marketing of their products through digital channels, in a more effective way. Among the main results the confirmation evidenced by the quantitative exploration stands out. On the theories exposed by various authors; who mention sensory factors as inhibitors of online shopping, particularly there is an important need to smell or touch food as well as be able to tell with more precise information the maturation time of an item or size according to what is desired at the moment. On the other hand; speaking of motivators, knowing the good experience of other buyers and comfort constitute important motivators for the purchase of fruits and vegetables online, with which there is an important input when generating suggestions for alternative media marketing of fresh food.

Multiobjective model for multicast overlay networks over IP/MPLS using MOEA
(2008-01-01) Montoya, J.; Donoso, Y.; Montoya, E.; Echeverri, D.; Universidad EAFIT. Departamento de Ingeniería de Sistemas; I+D+I en Tecnologías de la Información y las Comunicaciones
Multicast plays an important role in supporting a new generation of applications. At present and for different reasons, technical and non-technical, multicast IP hasn't yet been totally adopted for Internet. During recent years, an active area of research is that of implementing this kind of traffic in the application layer where the multicast functionality isnt a responsibility of the routers but that of the hosts, which we know as Multicast Overlay Networks (MON). In this article, routing in an MON is put forward as a multiobjective optimization problem (MOP) where two functions are optimized: 1) the total end to end delay of the multicast tree and 2) the maximum link utilization. The simultaneous optimization of these two functions is an NP-Complete problem and to solve this we suggest using Multiobjective Evolutionary Algorithms (MOEA), specifically NSGA-II.

Quality of Communications Infrastructure, Local Structural Transformation, and Inequality
    (Universidad EAFIT, 2022-10-18)
We analyze the causal impact of improvements in the quality of communication infrastructure on the structural transformation of US counties. Our treatment is the quality of communication infrastructure in a county, measured by the average Internet speed offered to businesses. We use as an instrumental variable the spatial structure of ARPANET, a network funded by the Department of Defense that is considered the precursor of the Internet, and whose location we determine using historical government documents. We show that faster Internet stimulates short-run growth and increases the shares of employment and GDP in high-skilled services, while negatively affecting sectors such as retail, accommodation, and food services. Two mechanisms explain our results. First, input-output linkages since industries that buy more ICT inputs increase their weight on the local economy. Second, a rise in high-skilled workers in ICT intensive occupations, which is consistent with the Rybczynski theorem of the Hecksher-Ohlin Vanek model and with the presence of capital-skill complementarities. Lastly, we find that better Internet increases earnings inequality within U.S. counties. Such finding has implications for Internet subsidies across the country.
