Publicación Evaluación de la metodología de gestión de riesgo del volcán Galeras(Universidad EAFIT, 2026-05-28) Silva Martínez, Andrés Felipe; NA; NAIngeniar, in 2019, carried out a study aimed at measuring the risk associated with the Galeras volcano. In this study, simulations were conducted using different parameters to determine the risk in the areas surrounding the volcano. However, the results obtained contradict those presented by the Colombian Geological Service (SGC) regarding the magnitude of the threat posed by the Galeras volcano. Therefore, the question I aim to answer is: Are the methodology employed and the results obtained by Ingeniar for the risk assessment of the Galeras volcano consistent with the nature of volcanic phenomena and the recurrence times of eruptions for this volcano? To answer this question, the methodology used in Ingeniar’s study was reviewed, in addition to comparing the results presented by this entity with the risk maps produced by the SGC. Among the methods used are numerical modeling of eruptive scenarios, ash dispersion and pyroclastic flow simulations, as well as the analysis of topographic and geological information from the volcano’s area of influence. These methods were analyzed in detail, and no errors were identified in their execution. In comparing the results of both studies, Ingeniar proposes a smaller hazard zoning than that developed by the SGC, suggesting that the SGC maps exaggerate the high-risk areas near the volcano. However, the work carried out by the Colombian Geological Service is more extensive, since it also produced hazard maps for other volcanic threats. In conclusion, the methodology is appropriate for risk assessment, and the results obtained are coherent; nevertheless, the main problem was that risk maps were not developed for all the hazards produced by the Galeras volcano.
