Ítem Academic synergy through integrated mechatronic projects(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., 2019-01-01) Velasquez-Lopez A.; Rodriguez-Garcia A.This Innovative to Practice Work in Progress paper presents an approach to obtain synergy by implementing an integrated mechatronic project within a postgraduate program. Mechatronics has been a reference for synergetic integration of technology. However, synergy is obtained not only from technical issues, but through professional skills. Nevertheless, traditional education and industry standards focus only on the technical side. The study case is performed within the program Integrated Design of Technical Systems by implementing strategies such as integrated scheduling, integrated assessment and project proposal with application fields such as agriculture, robotics, health and mobility. This approach does not require additional credits for a project course, since the project lies underneath the courses. Its purpose is to make a comparison between different design policies in Europe. This study started with a bibliographical review on the implementation of policies for strategic design in different countries and regions of Europe, as well as the analysis of competitiveness corporate ladder, competitiveness in design, innovation performance, etc. Because of these analyses, five countries and one region were selected: United Kingdom, Finland, Denmark, Norway, Estonia and Flanders. Information coding was conducted following the grounded theory research. Segments of analysis in the literature review, which were not preconceived prior to the initiation of this investigation, were identified and grouped into categories. Subsequently, matrix analyses and relationship networks or concept maps were used to visually demonstrate and compare the strategies that make up the design policies in each country/region. In addition, a relationship between competitiveness corporate ladder, growth of competitiveness and performance in innovation with the maps of the strategies could be established. The countries in the top 15 of the different rankings are those that have a higher chromatic brand because they have a higher number of strategies that promote design as a strategy. Nevertheless, a product line solution is not appropriate for all the cases and requires some conditions to be implemented successfully. The literature offers several contributions regarding the adoption of product lines. However, only a few of these support decision-makers for taking well-informed decisions in favor or against following this approach. This paper presents APPLIES, a framework to (i) detect signals that could motivate an organization to adopt a product line approach (ii) assess to what extent a company is prepared for supporting the practices necessary to adopt a product line. APPLIES is grounded in a thematic analysis of the literature and was preliminarily evaluated with two experts through a survey and an interview. One pedagogical activity used to promote global competencies is the participation of students in multinational design projects. This is a problem-based learning approach in an international setting, where students get immersed in the solution of anengineering design task while they work in teams and collaborate with international partners. The main goal of these projects is to foster international collaboration and to offer an opportunity to the students to develop professional skills through international teamwork effort in the solution of a design problem. However, a real challenge of this practice has been to create an effective interaction among the students participating in this type of projects and to maintain the flow of information, and student engagement in the project and in their learning. The main objective of this work is to investigate the sociotechnical interaction of engineering students working in a multinational collaborative project and the role of information technology tools and the nature of the interaction in this experience. For this purpose an assessment tool was developed and used to determine the interaction among the students (frequency, quantity and quality), the value of social interaction in the flow of the interaction, and the impact of the interaction in the development of the project. Departamento de Ingeniería de Procesos; Procesos Ambientales (GIPAB)In this work, the Box-Benkhen experimental Design (BBD) was applied for the optimization of the parameters of the electrocatalytic degradation of wastewaters resulting from a phenolic resins industry placed in the suburbs of Medellin (Colombia). The direct and the oxidant assisted electro-oxidation experiments were carried out in a laboratory scale batch cell reactor, with monopolar configuration, and electrodes made of graphite (anode) and titanium (cathode). A multifactorial experimental design was proposed, including the following experimental variables: initial phenol concentration, conductivity, and pH. The direct electro-oxidation process allowed to reach ca. 88% of phenol degradation, 38% of mineralization (TOC), 52% of Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) degradation, and an increase in water biodegradability of 13%. The synergetic effect of the electro-oxidation process and the respective oxidant agent (Fenton reactant, potassium permanganate, or sodium persulfate) let to a significant increase in the rate of the degradation process. At the optimized variables values, it was possible to reach ca. 99% of phenol degradation, 80% of TOC and 88% of COD degradation. These roles, however, are not clearly defined. Previous studies by the authors, conducted in Colombia, encountered several critical internal factors as well as environmental relationships proper of the ecosystem of business that affect performance in creative industries. HEIs can promote specific activities to become agents that enhance the development of these creative industries, thus contributing to overcome environmental and critical internal factors. This paper presents a model that can serve as a starting point within HEIs to establish policies towards this goal. For such purpose, the present research extended the aforementioned studies to Argentina and the United States, countries recognized worldwide for the development of "creative industries" or "creative economy". Fieldwork was performed in nine cities: two in Colombia, two in Argentina and five in the United States. Data was collected via interviews and focus group studies conducted at universities and creative industries, as well as with experts, government representatives and support organisations. A PESTEL analysis was used to identify weaknesses that could become opportunities for action within HEIs. The results allow for the establishment of nine key roles of the HEIs (i.e. education, moderator of the ecosystem, research, foster discussion, investment, on-going support, dynamism, joker, and simulation/real environment) that can be related to these institutions' substantive functions (i.e. teaching, research, extension, and support and integration), which contribute to enhance the development of creative industries, their growth and long-term sustainability. © 2015, The Design Society. One of the ways to achieve this goal is to acquire skills that allow the development of effective management processes. This study presents the development of a marketing plan for the Luminosa entrepreneurship, a candle producer that, based on its empirical experience and knowledge transfer from the academy, seeks to improve its processes and increase its competitiveness. Throughout this proposal, it is confirmed that all the stages of the planning process are interrelated and should not operate in isolation; all are important and contribute to the development of the SME.
