Publicación Financial well-being and credit behavior in Mexico(Universidad EAFIT, 2025) Patiño Hurtado, Germán Alonso; Hernández Zuluaga, Juan FelipePurpose: This study aims to analyze the relationship between credit score, credit behavior, and consumers' current, future, and overall financial well-being in Mexico. Credit behavior includes payment history, length of credit history, the amount owed, credit mix, and new credit applications. Design/methodology/approach: Our analysis employs and compares supervised learning methods, including OLS regression, regularized regression, and ensemble methods, to determine the factors that influence consumers' financial well-being. Findings: Our results confirm a significant association between credit score, credit behavior, and financial well-being. Specifically, factors such as the amount of debt, the length of credit history, and the opening of new credit accounts are linked to financial well-being, while payment history variables are irrelevant. Additionally, income level and having an extra income are also significant for financial well-being. Among the statistical models, we selected OLS regression due to its interpretability and performance compared to ensemble and regularized regression models. Originality: This work is relevant because, to our knowledge, it is the first to use data consolidated by a private company to estimate Mexico's financial well-being and its relationship to credit score and behavior. Limitations: The lack of data did not allow for a regional analysis since Mexico has diverse socioeconomic conditions and financial cultures. Practical implications: Our findings highlight the critical role of credit management in improving financial literacy, inclusion, and well-being. Consumers can benefit from policies and programs promoting appropriate credit use.
