This project provides the methodology to apply a Benchmarking approach between different companies in the apparel sector, the aim of the project is to evaluate the implementation degree of Lean manufacturing in their productive processes, specifically companies that produce blue jeans, T-shirts and polo shirts. This industry sector is very developed in the city of Medellin and it is one of the most dynamic industries, hence the interest in evaluation. For the Benchmarking methodology development, a questionnaire is needed to be constructed and applied in different companies in the city, the most important result was that, the implementation of Lean manufacturing techniques are not widespread among the industry and only those with big experience as exporters or international brands licensees are more advanced in their application and development.

A Comparative Assessment of Emerging Solvents and Adsorbents for Mitigating CO2 Emissions From the Industrial Sector by Using Molecular Modeling Tools
(Frontiers Media S.A., 2020-01-01) Bahamon D.; Alkhatib I.I.I.; Alkhatib N.; Builes S.; Sinnokrot M.; Vega L.F.; Universidad EAFIT. Departamento de Ingeniería de Procesos; Desarrollo y Diseño de Procesos
The possibilities offered by molecular modeling tools to obtain relevant data at process conditions, while also gaining molecular insights on the techniques used for CO2 capture and separation, are presented here using selected case studies. Two different technologies, absorption with amine-based systems and adsorption on porous materials, were explored, using the molecular-based equation of state, soft-Statistical Associating Fluid Theory (SAFT), and Grand Canonical Monte Carlo simulations, respectively. The aqueous monoethanolamine (MEA) system was set as the benchmark for absorption and compared to the performance of 8 alternative amine-based systems, while 16 adsorbents belonging to different families (zeolites, metal–organic frameworks, amorphous silicas, and activated carbons), bare or functionalized with alkylamines, were investigated for the separation of CO2 by adsorption. In addition to obtaining molecular information on the CO2 capture process, the models were further used to examine the CO2 capture performance in terms of cyclic working capacity and energy index as key performance indicators, allowing the identification of promising systems that can improve the current ones to be further evaluated for separation in non-power industries. Results show that for the same total amine mass concentration, non-aqueous amine solvents have a 5–10% reduction in cyclic working capacity, and a 10–30% decrease in the energy index compared to their aqueous counterparts due to their lower heat of vaporization and specific heat capacity. In addition, M-MOF-74, NaX, and NaY structures present the best results for adsorption in temperature swing adsorption (TSA) processes. Similar values of energy requirements to those of amine-based systems (2–2.5 MJ kg CO2–1) were obtained for some of the adsorbent; however, the disadvantage of the TSA process versus absorption should be considered. These results confirm the reliability of molecular modeling as an attractive and valuable screening tool for CO2 capture and separation processes. © Copyright © 2020 Bahamon, Alkhatib, Alkhatib, Builes, Sinnokrot and Vega.

Implementation of product lifecycle management tools using enterprise integration engineering and action-research
(TAYLOR & FRANCIS LTD, 2010-01-01) Penaranda, N.; Mejia, R.; Romero, D.; Molina, A.; Universidad EAFIT. Departamento de Ingeniería de Diseño; Ingeniería de Diseño (GRID)
This paper describes how enterprise integration engineering (EIE) and action-research (A-R) can be used to support the implementation of product lifecycle management (PLM) tools. The EIE concept is used to align the corporate strategies with the use of PLM technologies in order to impact the key performance indicators (KPIs) in the enterprise. An EIE reference framework is proposed to define strategies, evaluate performance measures, design/re-design processes and establish the enabling tools and technologies to support the enterprise strategies, while A-R is proposed to guide the PLM tools implementation at various stages of the product development process. An industrial application is described to demonstrate the benefits of applying EIE, A-R and PLM in an enterprise. © 2010 Taylor & Francis.

LAMDA-HAD, an Extension to the LAMDA Classifier in the Context of Supervised Learning
(World Scientific Publishing Co, 2020-01-01) Morales L.; Aguilar J.; Chávez D.; Isaza C.; Morales L.; Aguilar J.; Chávez D.; Isaza C.; Universidad EAFIT. Departamento de Ingeniería de Sistemas; I+D+I en Tecnologías de la Información y las Comunicaciones
This paper proposes a new approach to improve the performance of Learning Algorithm for Multivariable Data Analysis (LAMDA). This algorithm can be used for supervised and unsupervised learning, based on the calculation of the Global Adequacy Degree (GAD) of one individual to a class, through the contributions of all its descriptors. LAMDA has the capability of creating new classes after the training stage. If an individual does not have enough similarity to the preexisting classes, it is evaluated with respect to a threshold called the Non-Informative Class (NIC), this being the novelty of the algorithm. However, LAMDA has problems making good classifications, either because the NIC is constant for all classes, or because the GAD calculation is unreliable. In this work, its efficiency is improved by two strategies, the first one, by the calculation of adaptable NICs for each class, which prevents that correctly classified individuals create new classes; and the second one, by computing the Higher Adequacy Degree (HAD), which grants more robustness to the algorithm. LAMDA-HAD is validated by applying it in different benchmarks and comparing it with LAMDA and other classifiers, through a statistical analysis to determinate the cases in which our algorithm presents a better performance. © 2019 World Scientific Publishing Company.

A Metaheuristic Approach for the Cumulative Capacitated Arc Routing Problem
(Springer Verlag, 2018-09-03) Rivera, Juan Carlos; Lenis, Sergio Andres; Rivera, Juan Carlos; Lenis, Sergio Andres; Universidad EAFIT. Departamento de Ciencias; Modelado Matemático
In this paper we propose a new variant of the capacitated arc routing problem (CARP). In this new problem the objective function becomes a cumulative objective computed as the traveled distance multiplied by the vehicle load. A metaheuristic approach is proposed which is based on the hybridization of three known procedures: GRASP, VND and Set covering model. The metaheuristic is tested with some benchmark instances from CARP. The results allow to evaluate the performance with the different metaheuristic components and to compare the solutions with the classical objective function. © 2018, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Optimization of V-Trough photovoltaic concentrators through genetic algorithms with heuristics based on Weibull distributions
(Elsevier Ltd, 2018-02-15) Arias-Rosales A.; Mejía-Gutiérrez R.; Universidad EAFIT. Departamento de Ingeniería de Diseño; Ingeniería de Diseño (GRID)
Photovoltaic V-Troughs use simple and low-cost non-imaging optics, namely flat mirrors, to increase the solar harvesting area by concentrating the sunlight towards regular solar cells. The geometrical dispositions of the V-Trough's elements, and the way in which they are dynamically adjusted to track the sun, condition the optical performance. In order to improve their harvesting capacity, their geometrical set-up can be tailored to specific conditions and performance priorities. Given the large number of possible configurations and the interdependence of the multiple parameters involved, this work studies genetic algorithms as a heuristic approach for navigating the space of possible solutions. Among the algorithms studied, a new genetic algorithm named “GA-WA” (Genetic Algorithm-Weibull Arias) is proposed. GA-WA uses new heuristic processes based on Weibull distributions. Several V-Trough performance indicators are proposed as objective functions that can be optimized with genetic algorithms: (i) Ce? (average effective concentration); (ii) Cost (cost of materials) and (iii) Tsp (space required). Moreover, from the integration of these indicators, three multi-objective indices are proposed: (a) ICOE (Ce? versus Cost); (b) MICOE (Ce? versus Cost and Ce? versus Tsp combined) and (c) MDICOE (similar to MICOE but with discretization considerations). The heuristic parameters of the studied genetic algorithms are optimized and their capacities are explored in a case study. The results are compared against reported V-Trough set-ups designed with the interactive software VTDesign for the same case study. It was found that genetic algorithms, such as the ones developed in this work, are effective in the performance indicators improvement, as well as efficient and flexible tools in the problem of defining the set-up of solar V-Troughs in personalized scenarios. The intuition and the more holistic exploration of a trained engineer with an interactive software can be complemented with the broader and less biased evolutionary optimization of a tool like GA-WA. © 2017 Elsevier Ltd

Rediseño del proceso de mantenimiento para los activos productivos de la planta de superficies
(Universidad EAFIT, 2020) Rojas Baquero, José Arnulfo; Escalante Gómez, Juan Esteban
Currently, and in the face of high competition from the world market, modern companies are obliged to identify, propose and achieve optimization at all their organizational levels, since no productive sector escapes this trend. Research and development (R&D) and continuous improvement seek to make operations more efficient and effective, which is why they have become a basic component of management in most companies. Companies must implement methodologies to determine the current status of processes through an introspection (internal review) or an external analysis with other companies in the sector or with respect to a standard, through the analysis of variables that can generate cost overruns, reprocesses, inefficiencies, weaknesses, etc., that is, with the application of a benchmarking methodology; the this form determines the gaps and opportunities for improvement that it has and that could be implemented. At present, the maintenance management of productive assets demands great importance to achieve the objectives and goals of productive companies, in order to add value to achieve the greatest possible operational availability in a way that allows obtaining an appropriate cost of In accordance with organizational guidelines and make it possible to be competitive in the industry. Over the years, maintenance has evolved in a very significant way due to the fact that currently there are multiple methodologies, techniques and concepts for its application, with which it is possible to adequately optimize human, technical and material resources and also increase the availability of the productive assets of companies. The implementation of tools and models for maintenance management, such as total productive maintenance (TPM), maintenance focused on reliability (RCM), optimization of planned maintenance (PMO) and world-class maintenance, among others, applied to the productive assets of tiles or surfaces, is a suitable option to be able to reinforce and meet the company's objectives in order to increase the availability, reliability and maintainability of its production processes, while optimizing the programming and execution of plans current maintenance. For this, the maintenance strategy must be reinforced and restructured with the identified improvement opportunities, which could be presented in the future to the operations management so that it determines priority, times, objectives and resources to be assigned for its implementation.

Standardized Approaches for Assessing Metagenomic Contig Binning Performance from Barnes-Hut t-Stochastic Neighbor Embeddings
    (SPRINGER, 2020-01-01) Ceballos J.; Ariza-Jiménez L.; Pinel N.; Ceballos J.; Ariza-Jiménez L.; Pinel N.; Universidad EAFIT. Departamento de Ciencias; Bioiversidad, Evolución y Conservación
The performance of unsupervised methods for metagenomic binning is often assessed using simulated microbial communities. The lack of well-characterized evaluation protocols and approaches to community construction cognizant of biological realities impedes the rigorous assessment and standardization of the binning process. This work attempted to standardize performance evaluation using benchmark communities constructed according to the genome similarity metric Average Amino Acid identity. This approach allowed us to extend and deepen our previous research on the unsupervised binning of metagenomic sequence fragments based on low-dimensional embeddings of pentamer frequency profiles. Experimental results evidenced our method’s potential for the binning of metagenomic contigs to become an alternative to state-of-the-art methods such as MetaCluster 3.0. © 2020, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.
