Departamento de Humanidades; Centro de Estudios Urbanos y Ambientales (URBAM)Thousands of poor, marginal communities' residents die due to landslide events every year. The quick urbanization of mountainous areas, combined with an increased frequency of landslide events induced by heavy rains due to climate change, is leading to increased deaths year after year, and the problem will only get worse. Landscape Architects, trained to analyze and intervene in situations with complex natural and social territorial dynamics, are in position to make positive contributions to mitigating risks in such situations. A collaborative effort between a team of landscape architects from Germany and Urbanists in Medellín Colombia is carrying out a four-phased research and implementation proposal to anticipate and mitigate risk in low-income settlements on Medellín's urban periphery. They propose five pilot projects to test risk mitigation strategies through monitoring and early warning systems, drainage improvements, urban agriculture, slope forestation, and developing sites with the supplied services.Ítem A comparative computational study of blood flow pattern in exemplary textile vascular grafts(Taylor and Francis Ltd., 2018-01-01) R. VALENCIA; M. GARCÍA; J. BUSTAMANTE; R. VALENCIA; M. GARCÍA; J. BUSTAMANTE; Universidad EAFIT. Departamento de Humanidades; Centro de Estudios Urbanos y Ambientales (URBAM)Textile vascular grafts are biomedical devices and play an important role serving as a solution for the partial replacement of damaged arterial vessels. It is believed that the success of a textile vascular graft, in the healing process after implantation, is due to the porous micro-structure of the wall. Although the transport of fluids through textiles is of great technical interest in biomedical applications, little is known about predicting the micro-flow pattern and cellular transport through the wall. The aim of this work is to investigate how the type of fabric, permeability and porosity affect both the local fluid dynamics at several scales and the fluid-particle interaction between platelets in textile grafts, related with the graft occlusion. This study involves both experimental and computational tests. Experimental tests are performed to characterize the permeability and porosity according to the ISO 7198 standard. The numerical process is based on a multi-scale approach where the fluid flow is solved with the Finite Element Method and the discrete particles are solved with the Molecular Dynamic Method. The results have shown that the type of fabric in textile vascular grafts and the degree of porosity and permeability affect both the local fluid dynamics and the level of penetration of platelets through the wall, thus indicating their importance as design parameters. © 2017 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.Ítem Strategies for Sustainable Communities: Landscape-Based Landslide Risk Alleviation in Medellín(Routledge, 2019-01-01) Echeverri A.; Cadena-Gaitán C.; Echeverri A.; Cadena-Gaitán C.; Universidad EAFIT. Departamento de Humanidades; Centro de Estudios Urbanos y Ambientales (URBAM)We discuss municipal physical-spatial planning instruments as vehicles for the implementation of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in cities in the Global South. We do this by focusing on Medellin, Colombia, a city that has endured significant challenges-mainly related to poverty and violence-, but has attracted significant international attention due to its approach to territorial planning and its innovative application of new and existing legal tools to transform realities and repay historical debts with the urban poor. We performed a review of the most important documents related to SDG implementation in the country and the city, as well as Municipal Development Plans and legal planning instruments issued from 1 January 2016. The article maps active planning instruments and suggests the analysis, already from the diagnosis and formulation phases, of the linkage among strategies and projects, and SDGs, and the inclusion of SDG considerations in citizen participation instruments such as so-called Local Development Plans. © 2020 by the authors.Ítem Informality in Medellin through the Lens of Governance(Universidad del Rosario, 2020-01-01) E. CALDERON; A. ESLAVA; S. MEJIA-DUGAND; E. CALDERON; A. ESLAVA; S. MEJIA-DUGAND; Universidad EAFIT. Departamento de Humanidades; Centro de Estudios Urbanos y Ambientales (URBAM)Cities in the global South have received attention in global governance and sustainability discussions. This seems to be a logical result, considering that most people in the world live in them. In particular, Medellin has received important attention thanks to a series of urban interventions related to the improvement of different aspects of the quality of life of its inhabitants. In this article we discuss how governance is materialized and takes different shapes depending on the conditions and actors in each specific case. Additionally, we explore the case of Juan Bobo, a housing consolidation pilot project that took place in the city of Medellin. Through this case, we try to understand how governance takes shape under informal conditions and how can different functional combinations of governance styles be achieved to solve some of the problems that affect self-built neighborhoods in the city.
