Departamento de Ingeniería Mecánica; Mecatrónica y Diseño de MáquinasIn this paper, we present a novel method to analyze the behavior of discontinuous piecewise-smooth autonomous systems (denominated Filippov systems) in the planar neighborhood of the discontinuity boundary (DB). The method uses the evaluation of the vector fields on DB to analyze the nonsmooth local dynamics of the Filippov system without the integration of the ODE sets. The method is useful in the detection of nonsmooth bifurcations in Filippov systems. We propose a classification of the points, events and events combinations on DB. This classification is more complete in comparison with the others previously reported. Additional characteristics as flow direction and sliding stability are included explicitly. The lines and the points are characterized with didactic symbols and the exclusive conditions for their existence are based on geometric criterions. Boolean-valued functions are used to formulate the conditions of existence. Different problems are analyzed with the proposed methodology. © 2009 World Scientific Publishing Company.Ítem LOCALIZATION OF SLIDING BIFURCATIONS IN A ROTATIONAL OSCILLATOR WITH DOUBLE CAM(UNIV NAC COLOMBIA, FAC NAC MINAS, 2011-06-01) Arango, Ivan; Alexander Taborda, John; Olivar, Gerard; Arango, Ivan; Alexander Taborda, John; Olivar, Gerard; Universidad EAFIT. Departamento de Ingeniería Mecánica; Mecatrónica y Diseño de MáquinasIn this work, nonsmooth and non-conventional bifurcations, also called sliding bifurcations are analyzed in a system with multiple discontinuity boundaries. The singular point tracking (SPT) method is used to locate bifurcations in a rotational oscillator with double cam. The results indicate that SPT method is useful to analyze different nonsmooth systems with complex sliding dynamics.Ítem Localización de Bifurcaciones Deslizantes en un Oscilador Rotativo de Doble Leva(UNIV NAC COLOMBIA, FAC NAC MINAS, 2011-06-01) Arango, Iván Darío; Arango, Iván Darío; Universidad EAFIT. Departamento de Ingeniería Mecánica; Mecatrónica y Diseño de MáquinasIn this paper, we propose a novel strategy for the synthesis and the classification of nonsmooth limit cycles and its bifurcations (named Non-Standard Bifurcations or Discontinuity Induced Bifurcations or DIBs) in n-dimensional piecewise-smooth dynamical systems, particularly Continuous PWS and Discontinuous PWS (or Filippov-type PWS) systems. The proposed qualitative approach explicitly includes two main aspects: multiple discontinuity boundaries (DBs) in the phase space and multiple intersections between DBs (or corner manifolds-CMs). Previous classifications of DIBs of limit cycles have been restricted to generic cases with a single DB or a single CM. We use the definition of piecewise topological equivalence in order to synthesize all possibilities of nonsmooth limit cycles. Families, groups and subgroups of cycles are defined depending on smoothness zones and discontinuity boundaries (DB) involved. The synthesized cycles are used to define bifurcation patterns when the system is perturbed with parametric changes. Four families of DIBs of limit cycles are defined depending on the properties of the cycles involved. Well-known and novel bifurcations can be classified using this approach. © 2014 by the authors.Ítem Design of a statically balanced fully compliant grasper(Elsevier Ltd, 2015-10-01) Lamers, A.J.; Gallego Sánchez, J.A.; Herder, J.L.; Lamers, A.J.; Gallego Sánchez, J.A.; Herder, J.L.; Universidad EAFIT. Departamento de Ingeniería Mecánica; Mecatrónica y Diseño de MáquinasMonolithic and thus fully compliant surgical graspers are promising when they provide equal or better force feedback than conventional graspers. In this work for the first time a fully compliant grasper is designed to exhibit zero stiffness and zero operation force. The design problem is addressed by taking a building block approach, in which a pre-existing positive stiffness compliant grasper is compensated by a negative stiffness balancer. The design of the balancer is conceived from a 4-bar linkage and explores the rigid-body-replacement method as a design approach towards static balancing. Design variables and sensitivities are determined through the use of a pseudo-rigid-body model. Final dimensions are obtained using rough hand calculations. Justification of the pseudo rigid body model as well as the set of final dimensions is done by non-linear finite element analysis. Experimental validation is done through a titanium prototype of 40 mm size having an unbalanced positive stiffness of 61.2 N/mm showing that a force reduction of 91.75% is achievable over a range of 0.6 mm, with an approximate hysteresis of 1.32%. The behavior can be tuned from monostable to bistable. The rigid-body-replacement method proved successful in the design of a statically balanced fully compliant mechanism, thus, widening the design possibilities for this kind of mechanism. Departamento de Ingeniería Mecánica; Mecatrónica y Diseño de MáquinasWhile teams and projects tend to be multi-domain, the infrastructure required to integrate and build prototypes lags behind to allow an efficient interaction and to offer multi-disciplinary facilities. Hence this paper presents an infrastructure approach developed in a Latin American academic context, where the concept of an Engineering Building is explained in order to support the demands of a 3rd Generation University. A deeper emphasis of this article is placed upon the development of a Technology Integration Laboratory in terms of functionality, capacity, adjacencies, furnishing and, physiologic and psicologic support. The layout design is based on the concepts of Mechatronics and Technical Systems while enhancing a teaching–learning-building process. After 5 years of operation the results obtained in terms of prototyping, filed patents and projects with the triad government-industry-academy are discussed. Our experience shows that such hands-on engineering facilities are worth having, especially within a virtual education growing trend, and that openness has influenced an increment of the Intellectual Property results. © 2015, Springer-Verlag France.Ítem Dynamic analysis of a recirculation system of micro functional fluids for ink-jet applications(Springer Verlag, 2017-05-01) Arango, I.; Cañas, M.; Arango, I.; Cañas, M.; Universidad EAFIT. Departamento de Ingeniería Mecánica; Mecatrónica y Diseño de MáquinasThe rise of ink-jet printing technology has led to numerous studies about functional fluids, which, in most cases, are made to change and improve the chemical and rheological properties. Besides this, there are several patents about the recirculation fluid system that help to prevent settling particles, and thus improving print quality without consequences in the chemical composition of the fluid. This paper presents a dynamic analysis of a recirculation circuit for ink-jet microsystems applications with fluids that contain a particle size of 40 nm to 10 µ m. This analysis integrates multiple mathematical and experimental models, in regard to variables such as: viscosity change with temperature and solid volume fraction, sedimentation, surface tension and flow behavior. As a result, specific values of vacuum pressure for different drop-on-demand print heads with different ink-jet functional fluids, places of probable sedimentation and minimum pickup velocities to remove settled particles are given. © 2017, Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.Ítem Erratum to: Dynamic analysis of a recirculation system of micro functional fluids for ink-jet applications (Microsystem Technologies, (2017), 23, 5, (1485-1494), 10.1007/s00542-016-3254-z)(Springer Verlag, 2017-07-01) Arango, I.; Cañas, M.; Arango, I.; Cañas, M.; Universidad EAFIT. Departamento de Ingeniería Mecánica; Mecatrónica y Diseño de MáquinasThe Moving Particle Semi-implicit (MPS) method is a Lagrangian particle method based on the prediction-correction calculation of the velocity field and the Helmhotz-Hodge decomposition. Initially the predicted velocity is calculated with the viscous and external forces terms and then corrected by the gradient of the pressure which is obtained by the solution of the Poisson Pressure's equation. The MPS was developed for non-compressible bodies and it is adequate for free surface problems. However, when used to simulate fluid structure interaction problems, like ship resistance, the original formulation of the method can not accurately compute the pressure distribution over the bodies. This paper proposes a modified MPS method for modelling immerse bodies in an free surface flow. It was found that small variations in the source term of the Poisson Pressure's equation can destabilise simulations. Therefore, a reformulation of the Poisson pressure equation was developed. The results show that the proposed variation produced numerical stabilisation. The free surface particles behave in a good agreement with experimental observations. Also, although pressure fluctuations were still present, satisfactory results were obtained when comparing the drag coefficient with those reported values in the literature.Ítem Hydraulic and rotor-dynamic interaction for performance evaluation on a Francis turbine(Springer-Verlag France, 2017-08-01) Garcia, M.; Laín, S.; Orrego, S.; Barbosa, J.; Quintero, B.; Garcia, M.; Laín, S.; Orrego, S.; Barbosa, J.; Quintero, B.; Universidad EAFIT. Departamento de Ingeniería Mecánica; Mecatrónica y Diseño de MáquinasThis paper proposes a new methodology to evaluate the technical state of a Francis turbine installed in a hydroelectric plant by coupling computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and rotor-dynamic analysis. CFD simulations predicted the hydraulic performance of the turbine. The obtained field forces, due to the fluid-structure interaction over the blades of the runner, were used as boundary condition in the shaft rotor-dynamic numerical model, which accurately predicted the dynamic behavior of the turbine's shaft. Both numerical models were validated with in situ experimental measurements. The CFD model was validated measuring the pressure fluctuations near the rotor-stator interaction area and the torque and radial force in the shaft using strain gages. The rotor-dynamic model was validated using accelerometers installed over the bearings supporting the shaft. Results from both numerical models were in agreement with experimental measurements and provided a full diagnose of the dynamic working condition of the principal systems of the turbine. Implementation of this methodology can be applied to further identify potential failure and improve future designs.Ítem Investment strategies in the Latin American agri-business sub-sectors of agricultural commodities, biofuels and meat chains(Emerald Group Publishing Ltd., 2018-01-01) Saravia-Matus, S.; Saravia Matus, J.; Sotomayor, O.; Rodriguez, A.; Saravia-Matus, S.; Saravia Matus, J.; Sotomayor, O.; Rodriguez, A.; Universidad EAFIT. Departamento de Ingeniería Mecánica; Mecatrónica y Diseño de MáquinasPurpose The purpose of this paper is to review and examine the recent investment trends of firms operating in the food, feed and biofuel production and processing sectors in Latin America. The inter-related nature of these three sub-sectors and the great expansion they have gone through in the last decade showcases a series of socioeconomic and environmental policy challenges thus making it relevant to identify their different business models through a typology. Design/methodology/approach The paper first presents an unprecedented literature review based on field observations and media coverage of agri-business strategies of the food, feed and biofuel production in the region. It then moves to an in-depth analysis of investment operations that serve to classify such firms into a business model typology considering degree of internationalization and integration. The typology is a useful mechanism to enhance public policy analysis and uncover market or government incentives behind business decisions. Findings By focusing on investment strategies, the paper illustrates how both market and government incentives shape and affect the performance and consolidation of different players in the food, feed and biofuel sub-sectors in Latin America. The resulting effects have strong economic as well as social and environmental implications because such economic activities have an impact on global food and energy security. Research limitations/implications Limitations include a reliance on largely qualitative evidence and research methods due to unavailability of consistent numerical data in these specific agri-business sub-sectors. Originality/value This paper is unique in its focus on business models in a particularly relevant set of agri-business sub-sectors in Latin America and its implications to promote investment and innovation in value chain development while considering regional-specific challenges.
