Departamento de Administración; Administración y OrganizacionesExploring ways to understand the boundary of a problematic situation is fundamental to intervention. The boundary draws a difference between what is relevant and what is not relevant for the problem situation. In other words, it points out what it is and is not the system. Boundary Critique Theory, has used the notion of boundary to built ways to examine and reflect critically about the intervention process. It has developed ways to manage situations such as conflict, exclusion and the generation of reasonable discourse among the participants. These developments use ideas from sources such as critical theory, pragmatic philosophy, sociology, biology and cybernetics. This paper contributes to the range of theories informing Boundary Critique by adding a framework of Boundary Games. The framework is based on Wittgenstein's Language Games and Relevance Theory (a theory from Language Pragmatics). It shows new ways to reflect on the actions and language on a setting. Particularly, it proposes six possible "moves", intentions or games in relation to the boundary. The framework implies a shift in how the boundary is usually managed in Boundary Critique, from a boundary that shapes our actions towards a boundary that is shaped by every action.Ítem Boundary games: How teams of OR practitioners explore the boundaries of intervention(ELSEVIER SCIENCE BV, 2016-03-16) Velez-Castiblanco, J.; Brocklesby, J.; Midgley, G.An operational research (OR) practitioner designing an intervention needs to engage in a practical process for choosing methods and implementing them. When a team of OR practitioners does this, and/or clients and stakeholders are involved, the social dynamics of designing the approach can be complex. So far, hardly any theory has been provided to support our understanding of these social dynamics. To this end, our paper offers a theory of `boundary games'. It is proposed that decision making on the configuration of the OR approach is shaped by communications concerning boundary judgements. These communications involve the OR practitioners in the team (and other participants, when relevant) `setting', `following', `enhancing', `wandering outside', `challenging' and `probing' boundaries concerning the nature of the context and the methods to be used. Empirical vignettes are provided of a project where three OR practitioners with different forms of methodological expertise collaborated on an intervention to support a Regional Council in New Zealand. In deciding how to approach a problem structuring workshop where the Regional Council employees would be participants, the OR team had to negotiate their methodological boundaries in some detail. The paper demonstrates that the theory of boundary games helps to analyse and describe the shifts in thinking that take place in this kind of team decision making. A number of implications for OR practitioners are discussed, including how this theory can contribute to reflective practice and improve awareness of what is happening during communications with OR colleagues, clients and participants. Departamento de Administración; Administración y OrganizacionesIntentions serve multiple roles in human action. They help in making sense of our actions and those of others, and on this basis, coordination is possible. They cause, guide and sustain our actions. Additionally, they are about the present when we do act intentionally, but also they are about the future when we intend to do something later. From the aforementioned characteristics, it can be argued that intentions have a fundamental part in organizational interventions. Based on this assumption the paper proposes a model to make use of intentions in interventions. It aims to help in describing, conducting and learning about intervention processes. The model uses the graphical language advanced by the Soft Systems Methodology. The concept of intention and the assembling of the model, draw from Philosophies of Action, Language and Explanation and by the Theories of Relevance, Boundary Critique, and Complex Adaptive Systems.Ítem Juegos del lenguaje para la intervención. Departamento de Administración; Administración y OrganizacionesThe way in which boundary is marked around an issue, determines the way in which we understand, approach and intervene in such an issue. Stretching the way in which we understand the concept of boundary can expand our understanding of how to approach interventions in themselves. This paper proposes to contribute to understanding of boundary in Boundary Critique in two ways. First, by showing that those bounds can be understood as flexible and changing with every interaction of the actors. Second by showing that what is left outside of the limit defines the meaning of what is inside. The arguments draw from philosophy and pragmatics of language.Ítem The Structure of Problem Structuring Conversations: A Boundary Games Approach(Springer Netherlands, 2018-09-01) Velez-Castiblanco, J.; Londono-Correa, D.; Naranjo-Rivera, O.One of the questions associated with facilitated problem structuring is how the micro level of actors’ multimodal communications, contributes to the emergence of a macro level, framing the possibilities for action in a workshop. This paper shows a way to study this macro level, building the visualization of the conversations’ structure starting from a boundary games theory micro analysis of the interactions. Our empirical evidence comes from following a group of academic consultants working to define a value proposition for their activity. We focus on analyzing two out of nine workshops that were felt diametrically opposite in terms of facilitation and achievements. Moving from the micro towards an upward level, three configurations building the structure are identified—shifting, branching and converging. The work carried out allows us to: (1) visualize the structure of conversations in a problem structuring context, (2) highlight the role of multimodal communications in building the conversations and (3) construct an interpretation bridging the micro and macro readings of a workshop. This knowledge is useful for facilitators guiding the dynamic of a workshop and for researchers looking forward to understanding how micro level interactions build higher levels of the social phenomenon of intervention. © 2018, Springer Nature B.V.Ítem The Structure of Problem Structuring Conversations: A Boundary Games Approach(Springer Netherlands, 2018-09-01) Velez-Castiblanco, J.; Londono-Correa, D.; Naranjo-Rivera, O.One of the questions associated with facilitated problem structuring is how the micro level of actors’ multimodal communications, contributes to the emergence of a macro level, framing the possibilities for action in a workshop.
