It was a beautiful summer afternoon in June 1940, in a small French village east of Paris. Fortunately no one in my family was hurt. During the following four years, with other children of my age, I was often pulled out from home and school by siren whistles announcing airplanes approaching. Departamento de Geología; Ciencias del MarMore than 75% of Colombia's 42 million people live in urban areas located in the mountains and are exposed to numerous natural hazards: floods, flash floods, landslides, earthquakes and volcanism. The Armero disaster of 1985 triggered the creation of the National System for Disaster Prevention and Relief. National, regional and local committees started to operate across the country, accompanied by education commissions that produced diverse audiovisual materials to help educate people living in these areas. The experiences of working with local committees gained during the last two decades are presented here. Case histories are from cities such as Pereira, Manizales and Medellín, where the local committees are run by people with little or no formal education but who understand that they must participate as a group to prevent or mitigate the effects of natural disasters. The co-operation between technical experts and trained residents represents an outstanding example of good communication and co-operation for urban populations living in dangerous areas. Although many problems have yet to be resolved, these case histories show that this type of organization seems to be more effective than direct intervention from national government agencies. Departamento de Ciencias; Geología Ambiental y TectónicaAge of weathered andesitic volcanic ash layers, which cover most of the landscape in the Central Cordillera northern massif plateaus in Colombia, were determined through the use of fission track counting in volcanic zircon crystals. A stoneline, exposed in many outcrops, which corresponds to the lower limit of younger tephras, gave ages between 350 ka and 440 ka. Andosols lying above the stoneline could not be dated. Paleolake deposits in the study area and surroundings were dated at about 2 Ma; older ashes deposited on the Rio Negro erosion surface (SII) below the stoneline level gave ages between 3.4 and 5.4 Ma. The study area is located about 150 km from the volcanic center. The ash layers decrease in thickness only slightly with distance, as perceived from profiles sampled in flat areas. We conclude that the only noticeable erosional event in the region was the emplacement of the stone-line. This erosion event which was relatively short and mild in intensity, as part of the underlying soil derived from quartzdiorite was preserved. This soil formed above a saprolite with a thickness which may reach 150 m, a fact which supports the inference that the plateaus have been stable for millions of years, in contrast to the high erosion rates observed in the surrounding steep slopes and canyons. © 2006 Gebrüder Borntraeger.Ítem Geomorphological characteristics of the ruiz volcano and surroundings(Springer International Publishing, 2015-01-01) Hermelin, M.; Toro, G.; Mendez, R; Tavera, Miguel AngelLandforms related to the Ruiz Volcano, the northernmost active volcano in South America, are both of volcanic and glacial origins. A brief historical account includes several eruptions and culminates with the catastrophic one which occurred in November 13th, 1985. Departamento de Ciencias; Geología Ambiental y TectónicaThe Guamuez Lake (also called La Cocha) lies at 2765 m a.s.l. southeast of Pasto. La Corota, its main island, houses a wildlife sanctuary of endemic species protected by the Ministry of the Environment. The La Cocha valley and its neighbor the Sibundoy valley (similar, but completely drained lake) are both seated along one of the main strike-slip faults, the Algeciras fault. This fault system borders the Northern Andes in southwestern Colombia, forming valleys along its trace due to local pull-apart stress associated to its movements. Several small volcanic structures are aligned over the main fault traces which limit the tectonic valleys, making La Cocha a unique landscape. The vegetation that could be found around La Cocha is also unique, because it represents one of the altitudinal lowest paramo ecosystems in the world.Ítem Inselbergs near medellín(Springer International Publishing, 2015-01-01) García, C.; Hermelin, M.The northernmost part of the Central Cordillera is characterized by plateaus stretching from 1900 to 2700 m a.s.l. which were formed by erosion before the uplift of the cordillera, their different altitudes is an evidence of the successive pulses which were separated by quiet periods. One of the results of these tranquil epochs was the appearance of bornhardts at different altitude. Carved during Miocene and Pliocene in the Antioquian Batholith, a granodiorite intrusive which crystallized in the Upper Cretaceous. Departamento de Ciencias; Geología Ambiental y TectónicaAs a result of the 25 January 1999 Armenia earthquake, the city of Pereira (400,000 inhabitants), located on a volcanic ash-covered alluvial fan in the western limit of the Central Cordillera (Colombia), suffered 250 slope movements. After a complete inventory, a monitoring process of unstable areas was designed, based on repeated topographic surveys, soil pore saturation levels and visual inspections. The participation of the communities was crucial and permitted the prediction of slope movements between 2 weeks and 3 months in advance and the evacuation of the inhabitants. Three specific examples are discussed. The method could be improved by excavating observation trenches and observing in detail local rainfall. In all cases, the strong involvement of the community was considered indispensable for the success of the process. © Springer-Verlag 2004.Ítem The guamuéz (La Cocha) lake(Springer International Publishing, 2015-01-01) Duque-Trujillo J.F.; Hermelin, M.; Toro, G.Ítem The tatacoa desert(Springer International Publishing, 2015-01-01) Hermelin, M.The Desierto de la Tatacoa (the Tatacoa Desert), an extensive badland area related to dry climatic conditions due to a mountain barrier, lies on the eastern shore of the Magdalena River, 30 km north of Neiva, the capital of the Department (State) of Huila. It has been carved on the sub-horizontal strata of the Miocene La Victoria, Villavieja, and Gigante Formations, locally covered by Quaternary deposits. Detailed stratigraphic descriptions are available due to the presence of abundant vertebrate fossils in some of the layers. The present landscape offers a variety of landforms as badlands, pinnacles, and isolated erosional remnants forming curious figures produced by surface erosion and the different lithologies affected by the processes. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2016.
