This article proposes the creation of exercises that allow to begin the study of improvisation from the sections that require this process in the Concerto for vibraphone and orchestra No. 3 by Florian Poser. These suggestions arise from the need to offer some basic strategies for the interpretation of this concert. For this, in addition to having the personal experience of having interpreted the concert and its improvisation sections from direct dialogue with the composer, a harmonic analysis of the improvisation sections was carried out, which allowed the construction of small exercises. for those who may be interested in these processes, and in addition, a series of suggestions were raised for the approach of each one of them. As a result, 16 exercises were obtained that, with their respective recommendations, could help the interpreter with little experience in improvisation, to start in this type of process in which the interpreter becomes co-creator of the work itself.

(Universidad EAFIT, 2024) Arango Ospina, Eliana Patricia; Manco, Juan David
This article aims to identify the most recurrent musculoskeletal injuries in clarinet musicians in the city of Medellín, recognize their causes and consequences, and propose the importance of care for their prevention. After contextualizing the topic through existing literature, a survey was conducted among seven active professional clarinetists and seven student clarinetists. The results revealed that all respondents experienced some form of illness or pain related to clarinet practice. Pathologies such as hand tendonitis and upper body pains were mentioned, commonly associated with poor habits and improper instrument practices, all acquired from the early years of study. It is concluded that clarinetists in the city of Medellín are exposed to a high risk of developing injuries due to various factors. These issues appear to be recurrent and can have a significant impact on the physical health of musicians.

(Universidad EAFIT, 2024) Cano Cuervo, Jhon Harrison; Lennis Cortés, Laura Isabel
Within the different interpretations of the works of Johann Sebastian Bach for solo violin, most performers today have opted for two very different interpretive visions: a modern one based on current resources and knowledge that includes the use of vibrato and high positions, and the historical one, which sought to recreate the sound of its time within the conventions and interpretive possibilities of the moment. The purpose of this article is to present an interpretative proposal from a historical standpoint of the Adagio from the Violin Sonata BWV 1005 by J. S. Bach based on the Treatise on the Fundamental Principles of Playing the Violin, written by Leopold Mozart in 1756.

(Universidad EAFIT, 2024) Olarte Dittrich, Laura; Lennis Córtes, Laura Isabel
Through a collaboration with the composer David Ortega and the author of this article, the work 'El Salado: Four contemporary pieces for Viola and Fixed Support' emerged. This article reflects on the process of creating the work, describes the importance of motivation in the process of musical learning, and the repertoire as a structural axis in curricular design. The pieces were composed based on the need to create new pedagogical resources for teaching the viola at the intermediate levels, especially for the adolescent student, to stimulate his motivation in practice. This work, consequently, offers new learning strategies from a contemporary musical language with which the student can develop technical and musical aspects through improvisation, sound exploration, and decision-making in the learning process.

Adaptación de tres movimientos de la historia del tango de Astor Piazzolla para violonchelo con pedales de efectos y guitarra eléctrica - Adaptation of three movements from Astor Piazzolla's tango history for cello with effects pedals and electric guitar
(Universidad EAFIT, 2024) González Buitrago, Sergio; Manco, Juan David
This research-creation work explores the adaptation of three movements from Astor Piazzolla's “Historia del tango” to be performed on violoncello with sound pedals effects and electric guitar. The methodology was developed initially from the collection of the original scores, the structural analysis of the work, and the musical adaptation for cello, then the selection of microphones and effects pedals, and finally the exploration of the sounds of the selected pedals. With this process, the feasibility of using real-time sound effects was demonstrated, obtaining novel sound results that open up new possibilities in the interpretation of music written for cello.

Through this work, it is observed the teaching of vocal technique to a young woman with visual disabilities from birth. During eight training sessions, exercises were worked based on sensory and kinesthetic experiences. For each class, a rubric was used to record observations based on four essential elements of singing teaching: breathing, body control, vocalization, and voice projection. As a result of the observations, three themes emerged: recognizing physical sensations in vocal practice, didactic diversity in teaching, and use of figurative language in instruction. Clear and precise language in instruction is one of the conclusions obtained from this study. The results of this work allow us to reflect on singing instruction with students with visual disabilities.

The search for new sounds has been a constant in the work of composers throughout history, with electroacoustic music as an important innovation in this field. This genre establishes a new aesthetic, where it is possible to incorporate elements of folklore and academic music, combine different perspectives of musical language, and reevaluate the roles of composer, performer, and producer in creative processes. To find mechanisms to disseminate Colombian folk music, enrich the Colombian academic violin repertoire, and incorporate electroacoustic music into academic and popular musical traditions, this work analyzes how these elements are integrated into Emanuel Marín Mesa's piece Magdalena for violin and electronics, thereby exploring alternatives in composition for the instrument and the traditional musical genres of the Andean and Caribbean regions of Colombia.

This article provides an exercise in adapting three pieces of Colombian Andean music to solo double bass literature. To this end, a historiographical study was carried out at the organological level of the double bass, taking into account that this instrument is known as a great accompaniment in all types of music, but due to its tessitura, it is not recognized as a solo instrument in any genre. This is reflected in the small amount of solo repertoire that he has. For this reason, the historical and musical context of the composers of the three pieces was studied: Pedro Morales Pino, Luis A. Calvo and Luis Uribe Bueno. Finally, the adaptations were prepared in such a way that they are in the idiomatic language of the double bass, taking into account its organological dimension in a technical way, since, when playing its tones and semitones, the distances are much wider unlike other instruments, even more so in comparison with the piano and the Colombian Andean bandola. As a result of this, these three works are compatible with the double bass and are presented in this article.

The purpose of this article is to give an account of the process carried out in the construction of an interpretative proposal of the extended techniques in the three selected works of the contemporary repertoire for solo clarinet in Colombia. To do so, we began with a contextualization of the repertoire; then, a first approach to the works and composers; and finally, an analysis and creation of the interpretative proposals for each piece. It is concluded that musical interpretation can be approached from an objective or subjective stance, in which the interpreter decides under his or her own criteria what is most convenient to perform the music. In addition, being so diverse and flexible, a reflection on the possibilities offered by the extended techniques in the clarinet allows the performer to be autonomous to approach them with freedom.

(Universidad EAFIT, 2024) Betancur Vargas, Dayanna; Manco, Juan David
This research article aims to reflect on the phenomenon of anxiety in musicians, understanding the stimuli that trigger it and suggesting some tools to manage it. For this purpose, a case study was conducted with five piano students from Universidad Eafit, to whom the Beck Anxiety Inventory was applied to measure anxiety levels, and a semi-structured interview was conducted to deepen in the stimuli and origin of anxiety. The results showed that 80% of the participants suffer from severe anxiety and that among the stimuli that trigger it are various experiences related to university life: classes, concerts, exams, etc. It is concluded that although anxiety is an issue present in many music students, it is an issue that is not very common in the classroom, therefore, at the end of the article some tools for its management are provided.

Every musician's daily practice should include a brief period of warming up in order to prepare for physical activity associated with musical practice. However, there are quite different ideas about what it means to warm up among performers, which causes confusion and challenges when developing and executing a warm-up scheme. Therefore, in order to develop a warm-up plan, it is first necessary to specify the types of exercises that should be included, keeping in mind that while there are some realities that apply to musicians in general, these routines may also vary depending on the essential technical aspects of each instrument and the unique characteristics of each player. On the other hand, the fact that there are existing publications whose goal is to offer specific exercises and routines should not be disregarded. However, these resources are not always free of charge, and the majority of them are only available in English, which makes them difficult for certain music students to obtain. This article aims to provide the reader with tools for the design of warm-up routines based on technical difficulties of the repertoire, all approached from the perspective of the cello interpretation.

(Universidad EAFIT, 2023) Alzate Cardona, Diego León; Tovar Henao, Felipe
One of the challenges faced by directors of orchestral programs in education is the search for repertoire that works well for the ensemble. This has been a topic of discussion and reflection among directors, who seek different methodologies to make accurate choices in this regard. Colombia is a musical territory, and although the band ensemble is predominant, there has been noticeable growth in youth orchestras in the country. Over the past decade, orchestral educators and public and private institutions have been promoting various classification tools for assessing the levels of ensembles and their repertoire. However, there is a need to unify these tools so that our language converges under the same parameters. This article documents the process undertaken with the Rionegro Symphony Orchestra when selecting repertoire. Thanks to this, a tool is generated that encourages thinking about aspects specific to art, music, and education.

(Universidad EAFIT, 2023) Villa Thomas, María De La Luz; Tovar Henao, Felipe
In the 20th century, numerous Colombian composers embraced the transformative trends that swept through Latin American music, particularly in the realm of piano music. This article specifically examines the analysis of piano pieces by composers from the Colombian Caribbean, with the aim of categorizing them. The objective is to perceive this endeavor as a progressive organizational process, duly acknowledging the educational commitments involved. Accordingly, I delve into the piano repertoire of this region, focusing on notable musicians such as Emirto De Lima, Ángel María Camacho y Cano, Adolfo Mejía, Pedro Biava, and Hans Neuman. Despite the existing publications, many of their compositions remain relatively inaccessible and have not been thoroughly scrutinized for potential inclusion in university piano curricula. Undertaking projects of this nature becomes imperative to foster the interpretation of these works among upcoming generations of pianists. Such initiatives contribute to the advancement of learning and piano training in Colombia, utilizing the national repertoire as a foundation. This article is divided into four sections: the first section presents the issue at hand; the subsequent section delves into the relevant research background; the third section encompasses the analysis and categorization of the works according to difficulty levels; and, finally, the article concludes by summarizing the findings and suggesting new avenues for future research.

(Universidad EAFIT, 2023) Pico Ospina, Steven; Lennis Cortés, Laura Isabel
The purpose of this article is to examine the perspectives of three Colombian conductors about their daily basis work, the importance of the repertoire, and the process of adapting rehearsal methodologies during the period of confinement due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Through interviews, participants reported their experiences. An inductive approach was used to analyze the data and four themes emerged as result of the analysis: the role of the conductor: towards the humanization of practice, verbal and non-verbal language as a means of communication in orchestra conducting, motivation as a cornerstone of ensemble practice, and the repertoire as a tool for the development of musical skills. Based on these themes, we reflect on the importance of the director as a guide of a musical group, and the learnings that resulted from the confinement of 2020.
