La asincronía entre la ciencia y la ética : un reto para la supervivencia

This paper aims to find the state of the matter regarding the solvency of an useful and valid ethical framework to face the unintentional challenges of science, impassive, in particular genetic engineering, impacting humanity’s concept of good and virtue. Assuming different perspectives, some catastrophic, some moderate and some hopeful, the concepts and recommendations of scientists and international entities are reviewed. Furthermore, the perceptions of three contemporary thinkers on the issues generated by the science of genetic engineering and human genome modifications are also reviewed, which open the doors to a potential and new eugenics, both liberal and totalitarian, with the effects on an individual’s self-understanding as well as the ethical understanding and validity of the species.
The paper’s hypothesis indicates that there is currently an important asynchrony between science and ethics, stating that there is no ethical capacity leading humanity through time and evolution, seeking the survival of the species or accompanying it on its journey to a new era and a new humanity.

Este trabajo se ocupa del estado de la cuestión respecto a la solvencia actual de un marco ético que sea útil y vigente para afrontar los desafíos a los que la ciencia, impasible –en particular, la ingeniería genética– somete sin proponérselo a la humanidad, para encararlos desde el bien y la virtud. A partir de diferentes miradas, unas catastróficas, otras moderadas o esperanzadas, se revisan los conceptos y las recomendaciones de científicos y entes internacionales. Luego se retoman las percepciones de tres renombrados pensadores de los últimos años sobre las inquietudes que suscita la ciencia de la ingeniería genética y la modificación del genoma humano a través de ella, lo cual abre las puertas de una potencial y nueva eugenesia, tanto liberal como totalitaria, con los efectos particulares que pueda tener sobre el propio entendimiento del individuo y el entendimiento ético y la vigencia de la especie.
La hipótesis del trabajo indica que existe una importante asincronía dada en los últimos tiempos entre la ciencia y la ética, afirmando que por ello no hay suficiencia ética que conduzca a la humanidad en el tiempo y su evolución, que procure por la subsistencia de la especie y que la acompañe con claridad en el viaje hacia una nueva era y, tal vez, a una nueva humanidad.
