| dc.description.abstract | Les États de l´Amérique du sud sont encore á peu prés inconnus en Europe, non seulement du vulgaire, mais souvent aussi des savants eux-memes. C´est á peine si dans les géographies universelles on leur consacre quelques lignes sommaires, presque toujours les memes depuis le commencement du siécle. On croirait, en vérité, que ces nations viennent de naitre ou qu´elles sont du nombre de ces peuples heureux qui n´ont pas eu d´histoire : aucune mention de leurs souffrances, de leurs luttes fécondes pour la liberté et le progrés. Comment donc s´étonner de ce que nous passions encore aux yeus de tant de gens pour des sauvages courant tout nus dans les bois et vivant au jour le jour du produit de la chasse et de la peche?. D´aucuns nous font l´honneur de croire que nous ne sommes pas précisément des canniblaes ; mais ce sont lá des concessions gracieuses sous lesquelles on devine aisément toutes les idées préconcues et toutes les ignorances qui s´y cachent | spa |
