Abstract. In La ceiba de la memoria, a historical novel written by the colombian writer Roberto Burgos cantor, the events as well as the reflections portrayed in the characters‟ speech show an enriching scenery that leads to the analysis of the mysticism and reason. On one hand, Pedro Claver‟s conflict between his self-sacrifice and his overlooking of reason, on the other, Alonso Sandoval‟s rationality in his struggle for men‟s freedom. This text will follow the traces of this millenary conflict based on the ethic-objective principles from the American Philosopher Ayn Rand without leaving aside some important concepts of the historical novel.
