Mechatronics has been a reference for synergetic integration of technology. However, synergy is obtained not only from technical issues, but through professional skills. Nevertheless, traditional education and industry standards focus only on the technical side. The study case is performed within the program Integrated Design of Technical Systems by implementing strategies such as integrated scheduling, integrated assessment and project proposal with application fields such as agriculture, robotics, health and mobility. This approach does not require additional credits for a project course, since the project lies underneath the courses. The solution is based on a Tongue Machine Interface (TMI) involving the use of Force Sensing Resistors (FSRs). The semantics and functionality of the development are compared with two other interfaces: a Joystick and a Brain Computer Interface (BCI) implemented on the same wheelchair. Each development is described from the electric, mechanic and informatic domains. Surveys and user's tests were performed in order to explore which technology had a more positive impact on the mobility of quadriplegic persons in terms of effectiveness, better ergonomics, lower costs and better functionality. The quantitative and qualitative results are described and analyzed.Ítem Implementation of multilateral environmental agreements: Rationale and design of the environmental conventions index(MDPI AG, 2020-01-01) Escobar-Pemberthy N.; Ivanova M.Global environmental conventions are created to address and resolve global environmental problems. Assessments of the achievement of specific environmental goals, however, indicate that there is room for progress and that improved collective action is required. Given the few existing studies that measure the implementation of international environmental law, it is important to expand existing analytical frameworks about international environmental agreements and their translation into national policies. This article explains the rationale and design of the Environmental Conventions Index, an implementation measurement tool we have developed at the Center for Governance and Sustainability at the University of Massachusetts Boston. The Index assesses the implementation of global environmental conventions in two clusters-conservation and pollution-showcasing the main trends for both countries and conventions. Using a mixed-method approach, we explain the development of this measurement tool as an instrument to inform policy changes at the national and global levels and present aggregate results of the analysis. As global environmental challenges in the conservation of natural resources and the persistence of pollutants become critical, assessment of countries' performance on international environmental goals is essential. In addition, it remains a term highly confused with respect to other areas of data science, such as data mining, and Big Data. There are few methodologies for its implementation, in addition, its complexity makes it non-participatory, with a certain degree of resistance on the part of the users. The knowledge and skills of users must be exploited when analyzing and producing the business intelligence necessary for the Data Analytic execution. In this position paper, we explore the possibilities of contribution through a Methodology for Data Analytic, which is extended with the incorporation of features extracted from a user-centered design (UCD) approach inspired by the ISEA methodology. At present and for different reasons, technical and non-technical, multicast IP hasn't yet been totally adopted for Internet. During recent years, an active area of research is that of implementing this kind of traffic in the application layer where the multicast functionality isnt a responsibility of the routers but that of the hosts, which we know as Multicast Overlay Networks (MON). In this article, routing in an MON is put forward as a multiobjective optimization problem (MOP) where two functions are optimized: 1) the total end to end delay of the multicast tree and 2) the maximum link utilization. Departamento de Ingeniería de Diseño; Ingeniería de Diseño (GRID)Photovoltaic V-Troughs use simple and low-cost non-imaging optics, namely flat mirrors, to increase the solar harvesting area by concentrating the sunlight towards regular solar cells. The geometrical dispositions of the V-Trough's elements, and the way in which they are dynamically adjusted to track the sun, condition the optical performance. In order to improve their harvesting capacity, their geometrical set-up can be tailored to specific conditions and performance priorities. Given the large number of possible configurations and the interdependence of the multiple parameters involved, this work studies genetic algorithms as a heuristic approach for navigating the space of possible solutions. Among the algorithms studied, a new genetic algorithm named “GA-WA” (Genetic Algorithm-Weibull Arias) is proposed. GA-WA uses new heuristic processes based on Weibull distributions. Several V-Trough performance indicators are proposed as objective functions that can be optimized with genetic algorithms: (i) Ce? (average effective concentration); (ii) Cost (cost of materials) and (iii) Tsp (space required). Moreover, from the integration of these indicators, three multi-objective indices are proposed: (a) ICOE (Ce? versus Cost); (b) MICOE (Ce? versus Cost and Ce? versus Tsp combined) and (c) MDICOE (similar to MICOE but with discretization considerations). The heuristic parameters of the studied genetic algorithms are optimized and their capacities are explored in a case study. The results are compared against reported V-Trough set-ups designed with the interactive software VTDesign for the same case study. It was found that genetic algorithms, such as the ones developed in this work, are effective in the performance indicators improvement, as well as efficient and flexible tools in the problem of defining the set-up of solar V-Troughs in personalized scenarios. The intuition and the more holistic exploration of a trained engineer with an interactive software can be complemented with the broader and less biased evolutionary optimization of a tool like GA-WA. © 2017 Elsevier LtdÍtem WeSketch: A 3D real time collaborative virtual environment that improves the GUI sketching task(2010-01-01) Hernández, H.A.; Trefftz, H.; Universidad EAFIT. We Sketch allows a small geographically distributed group to build GUI prototypes in a highly participative manner, keeping everyone aware of what is going on. A 3D virtual round table, virtual sheets simulating sketches, avatars representing users, an audio communication system and a shared view of sketches are the pieces that allow designers to discuss and co-design GUIs in real time offering a comfortable and pleasant experience. Agile frameworks give teamwork structure and dynamics which are focused on delivering value in an incremental way. Traditional frameworks establish clarity in work products and project phases along all its lifecycle. The combination of frameworks can help to apply best practices of different models, but increasing the complexity in the methodology definition when having to start from contexts of a different nature. You will see in this article a carried out study that confirms the use of agile/traditional mixed methodologies in the industry, the difficulties that emerged and that are still seen in this approach, and the creation, setting and analysis of a guide that helps to uncomplex the definition of mixed methodologies. © Springer International Publishing AG 2018.
