Ítem Detrital zircon fission-track thermochronology and magnetic fabric of the Amagá Formation (Colombia): Intracontinental deformation and exhumation events in the northwestern Andes(ELSEVIER SCIENCE BV, 2017-07-01) Piedrahita, V.A.; Bernet, M.; Chadima, M.; Sierra, G.M.; Marín-Cerón, M.I.; Toro, G.E.; Piedrahita, V.A.; Bernet, M.; Chadima, M.; Sierra, G.M.; Marín-Cerón, M.I.; Toro, G.E.; Universidad EAFIT. Departamento de Ciencias; Geología Ambiental y TectónicaNew detrital zircon-fission track (ZFT) and magnetic fabric data are presented to constrain the time of deposition, provenance and deformation of the of Lower and Upper members of the Amagá Formation in the Amagá Basin. The Amagá Basin is located in the northern Andes, between the Western and Central Cordilleras of Colombia. The Amagá Formation was deposited in a transpressive geodynamic context and is allegedly synchronous with tectonic events such as the Andean orogeny and the Panama-Choco Block collision with the northwestern South American Plate. Detrital ZFT data confirm an Oligocene age for the Lower Member and a middle-Miocene age for the Upper Member of the Amagá Formation. In addition to constraining the depositional age, the ZFT data presented in this study also reflect Paleocene-Eocene, late to early Oligocene and late to middle Miocene cooling in sediment source areas mainly located in the Central and Western Cordilleras of Colombia. These ages can be associated with regional exhumation events in the central and northern Andes of South America. Collisional stages of the Panama-Choco Block against northwestern South America, subduction of the Farallon-Nazca Plate and strike-slip reactivation periods of the Cauca-Romeral fault system, caused NW-SE compression and NE-SW simple shear in the Amagá Basin. This deformational regime, identified by magnetic fabric data, induces syn- and post-depositional deformation over the Amagá Formation. © 2017 Elsevier B.V.Ítem Holocene soft-sediment deformation of the Santa Fe-Sopetrán Basin, northern Colombian Andes: Evidence for pre-Hispanic seismic activity?(ELSEVIER SCIENCE BV, 2011-04-01) Suter, F.; Martinez, J. I.; Velez, M. I.; Universidad EAFIT. Departamento de Geología; Ciencias del MarThe detailed study of four deformed intervals from the Holocene fluvio-lacustrine deposits of the Santa Fe-Sopetrán Basin in northern Colombia shows 17 types of soft-sediment deformation (SSD) structures. Evidence indicates that seismic activity was responsible for the SSD structures, a conclusion reached after considering the environmental conditions at the time of sediment deposition and shortly after, and the detailed analysis of the driving force systems. Other triggers (i.e. overloading and rapid sedimentation), however, are not discarded. Intervals showing SSD structures occurred at centennial frequencies and apparently resulted from Mw 6-7 earthquakes. The Holocene age of these major shaking events should be seriously considered when evaluating the seismic hazard and risk for the middle Cauca Valley and the nearby city of Medellín with 3. million inhabitants. © 2010 Elsevier B.V.Ítem Large-magnitude late Holocene seismic activity in the Pereira-Armenia region, Colombia(GEOLOGICAL SOC AMER INC, 2011-01-01) Lalinde, C.P.P.; Toro, G.E.; Velásquez, A.; Audemard, F.A.M.; Lalinde, C.P.P.; Toro, G.E.; Velásquez, A.; Audemard, F.A.M.; Universidad EAFIT. Departamento de Ciencias; Geología Ambiental y TectónicaThe Pereira-Armenia region, located west of the Colombian Central Cordillera, is crosscut by the Romeral fault system, which consists of an active north-south- trending, left-lateral, strike-slip fault system with a secondary thrust component in the Eje Cafetero zone (4°N-5°N). The terrain where the Liceo Taller San Miguel high school sits-9 km south of Pereira-is draped with an ~2-m-thick layer of volcanic ash younger than 30 k.y. in age. This locality has been affected by both N40°E- and E-W-trending faults that correspond to thrust faults or folds and normal rightlateral, strike-slip faults, respectively, in the tectonic model for the zone. Two kinds of strong fi eld evidence for the E-W faults were found at a site named Canchas: (1) the 50°N tilt of the late Quaternary interbedded sequence of volcanic ash and three paleosols, and (2) a vertical fault throw of ~1.70 m affecting the sequence (layers). A normal vertical throw of ~0.65 m at Parqueadero stands as a proof of the activity of the N40°E-trending faults. This latter faulting does not correspond with the stress tensor proposed for this region, and thus this deformation could be interpreted as being a consequence of fl exural slip induced by a NE-SW-striking blind thrust, where reverse faulting along bedding at depth is seen as normal faulting at the surface. Measured offsets could have generated seismic events of at least Mw 6.6 for the NE-trending fault that affected the paleosols and volcanic ash sequence at 13,150 ± 310 14C yr B.P., and a seismic event of Mw 6.9 for the E-W-trending fault that affected the paleosols and volcanic ash sequence at 19,710 ± 830 14C yr B.P. These two recently identifi edfaults are now named the Tribunas (NE-SW) and the Cestillal (E-W) faults. Up to now, the fault and its seismogenic potential determinations in this region have been based solely on morphologic evidence. The maximum seismic magnitude estimated for this region ranged from Mw 6.2 to Mw 6.6 for seismic sources 35 km away from the site. Seismic magnitudes like the one calculated in this work (Mw 6.9) were previously estimated only for source-site distances greater than 50 km. This work provides fi eld evidence that leads to a better understanding of the seismic activity of this region in the last 30 k.y. and confi rms the occurrence of local Mw >6.5 seismic events in this region. Although volcanic ash drapes and eventually hides the geomorphic evidence of active deformation, it turns out to be a perfect chronometer of a fault's activity whenever the deformation is revealed, as in this case. After the Armenia event of 1999, it is imperative to examine the seismic hazard assessments of this region in terms of local crustal seismicity. © 2011 The Geological Society of America. Departamento de Ingeniería de Producción; Materiales de IngenieríaThe spherical indentation response of a dense bitumen macadam asphalt mixture with two different volume fractions of bitumen binder is investigated both experimentally and via an analytical model. The model for the indentation of bitumen developed by Ossa et al. in 2005, was used to study the spherical indentation behavior of the mixtures with good agreement when compared to experimental results. An extensive experimental study of the monotonic and recovery spherical indentation behavior is reported for a range of temperatures. In line with the predictions of the model, the monotonic indentation response of the mixtures exhibits a power-law dependence on the indentation force. The model is also successful in capturing the indentation recovery behavior of the mixtures. A comparison of the material parameters obtained from uniaxial compression and indentation tests showed that indentation tests can be used in an easy and reliable way to obtain the fundamental asphalt parameters. Further, parameters found from indentation tests implicitly account for the confining conditions generated by the aggregate particles below the indenter. © 2007 ASCE.Ítem Timing of rifting in the southern Gulf of California and its conjugate margins: Insights from the plutonic record(Geological Society of America, 2015-05-01) Duque-Trujillo, J.F.; Duque-Trujillo, J.F.; Universidad EAFIT. A.; Deshpande, V. S.; Cebon, D.; Ossa, E. A.; Deshpande, V. S.; Cebon, D.; Universidad EAFIT. Departamento de Ingeniería de Producción; Materiales de IngenieríaThe triaxial compressive response of bituminous mixes with volume fractions of aggregate in the range 52 to 85% was investigated over a wide range stresses and strain rates. The types of loadings considered include triaxial monotonic constant stress and constant applied strain rate, as well as creep recovery, continuous cyclic, and stress pulse train loadings. The mixes with a "fully dense" aggregate skeleton were found to dilate under all loading conditions and the creep response of the mixes was dependent on both the deviatoric and hydrostatic stresses. By contrast, recovery was found to occur under zero applied deviatoric stresses with the recovery rate only dependent on the "recoverable strain" and independent of any superimposed hydrostatic stress. Continuous and pulse loading cyclic stress-controlled tests showed that the response of the mixes was governed by the mean applied deviatoric stress in the continuous cyclic tests while strain recovery was important in the pulse loading tests. A phenomenological constitutive model was proposed to fit the measured triaxial response of the bituminous mixes and shown to capture the measurements over all the triaxial stress states and loading time histories investigated here. Furthermore, the model was extended to capture the temperature dependence of the mixtures which is governed by the temperature dependence of the bitumen binder. © 2010 ASCE.Ítem Unravelling the widening of the earliest Andean northern orogen: Maastrichtian to early Eocene intra-basinal deformation in the northern Eastern Cordillera of Colombia(Wiley-Blackwell Publishing Ltd, 2020-07-21) Bayona G.; Baquero M.; Ramírez C.; Tabares M.; Salazar A.M.; Nova G.; Duarte E.; Pardo A.; Plata A.; Jaramillo C.; Rodríguez G.; Caballero V.; Cardona A.; Montes C.; Gómez Marulanda S.; Cárdenas-Rozo A.L.; Universidad EAFIT. Departamento de Ciencias; Biodiversidad, Evolución y ConservaciónThe onset of deformation in the northern Andes is overprinted by subsequent stages of basin deformation, complicating the examination of competing models illustrating potential location of earliest synorogenic basins and uplifts. To establish the width of the earliest northern Andean orogen, we carried out field mapping, palynological dating, sedimentary, stratigraphic and provenance analyses in Campanian to lower Eocene units exposed in the northern Eastern Cordillera of Colombia (Cocuy region) and compare the results with coeval succession in adjacent basins. The onset of deformation is recorded in earliest Maastrichtian time, as terrigenous detritus arrived into the basin marking the end of chemical precipitation and the onset of clastic deposition produced by the uplift of a western source area dominated by shaly Cretaceous rocks. Disconformable contacts within the upper Maastrichtian to middle Palaeocene succession document increasing supply of quartzose sandy detritus from Cretaceous quartzose rocks exposed in eastern source areas. The continued unroofing of both source areas produced a rapid shift in depositional environments from shallow marine in Maastrichtian to fluvial-lacustrine systems during the Palaeocene-early Eocene. Supply of immature Jurassic sandstones from nearby western uplifts, together with localized plutonic and volcanic Cretaceous rocks, caused a shift in Palaeocene sandstones composition from quartzarenites to litharenites. Supply of detrital sandy fragments, unstable heavy minerals and Cretaceous to Ordovician detrital zircons, were derived from nearby uplifted blocks and from SW fluvial systems within the synorogenic basin, instead of distal basement rocks. The presence of volcanic rock fragments and 51–59 Ma volcanic zircons constrain magmatism within the basin. The Maastrichtian–Palaeocene sequence studied here documents crustal deformation that correlates with coeval deformation farther south in Ecuador and Peru. Slab flattening of the subducting Caribbean plate produced a wider orogen (>400 km) with a continental magmatic arc and intra-basinal deformation and magmatism. © 2020 International Association of Sedimentologists and European Association of Geoscientists and Engineers and John Wiley - Sons Ltd
