Escuela de Ciencias; Modelado MatemáticoIntroduction: Back pain, patellofemoral syndrome and "growing pains" are increasingly common in children and adolescents, both with incidence and precocity of appearance. In most cases their etiology is unknown. Objective: The objective of this research was to explore the possible association of these three entities with pelvic anteversion. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study with case-control analysis, comprising a group of 30 symptomatic children aged between 6 and 17 years (cases) who had consulted for low back pain, "growing pains" or sore knees, and a control group of 30 children with no history of pain in these areas (controls). To measure the position of the pelvis and other biomechanical variables a software programme was developed that quantifies these measurements from reflective markings located on specific anatomical landmarks of each child. Other measurements were obtained through semiological tests and interviews with children and their parents. Results: Children and adolescents with pain had more pelvic anteversion compared with controls (mean 13.3 and 5.4 degrees, p < 0.001). They also had less strength in muscles: Lumbar extensor, abdominals, psoas and diaphragm. We found that psoas is the muscle most responsible for pelvis anteversion in symptomatic group. Compared with children without pain, those with back pain, patellofemoral syndrome or "growing pains" have 4.2 times more frequent poor or regular strength in the column extensor muscles. They also have nearly 18 times as likely to have a pelvic angle greater than 10 degrees compared with no pain children. Conclusions: Children and adolescents who suffer from back pain, patellofemoral syndrome and "growing pains" have increased pelvic anteversion and lower muscle strength, mainly in the thoracolumbar spine extensors, abdominals, diaphragm and psoas. The study found that the psoas muscle is most responsible for the development of pelvis anteversion. Departamento de Ingeniería Mecánica; Bioingeniería GIB (CES – EAFIT)Objective: To implement a teleradiology pilot system in Medellín city using software for remote access, this allows the communication and interpretation of biomedical images at distance. Materials and methods: Images from different magnetic resonance and computed tomography studies stored in DICOM format were used. Data were transmitted in a point-to-point network using an integrated services digital network (ISDN) line between two radiological diagnostic centers. The system was developed under PC Intel's ×86 architecture, with Windows® 2000 as the operating system. Results: In order to read and visualize images stored in DICOM format, a Java application with functions that allow their manipulation and the option to export them to other formats such as JPEG, TIFF and BMP was developed. Conclusion: The system allows a clinically reliable diagnostic and remote interpretation for modalities such as computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance (MR) images, with acceptable response times. © 2006 Corporación Editora Médica del Valle.Ítem Shack-Hartmann spot dislocation map determination using an optical flow method(OPTICAL SOC AMER, 2014-01-27) Vargas, J.; Restrepo, R.; Belenguer, T.; Universidad EAFIT. Departamento de Ciencias Básicas; Óptica AplicadaWe present a robust, dense, and accurate Shack-Hartmann spot dislocation map determination method based on a regularized optical flow algorithm that does not require obtaining the spot centroids. The method is capable to measure in presence of strong noise, background illumination and spot modulating signals, which are typical limiting factors of traditional centroid detection algorithms. Moreover, the proposed approach is able to face cases where some of the reference beam spots have not a corresponding one in the distorted Hartmann diagram, and it can expand the dynamic range of the Shack-Hartmann sensor unwrapping the obtained dense dislocation maps. We have tested the algorithm with both simulations and experimental data obtaining satisfactory results. Departamento de Ingeniería Mecánica; Laboratorio CAD/CAM/CAEThis paper presents an extension visual attention maps for volume data visualization, where eye fixation points become rays in the 3D space, and the visual attention map becomes a volume. This Volume Visual Attention Map (VVAM) is used to interactively enhance a ray-casting based direct volume rendering (DVR) visualization.
