Ítem Multi-layer Graph Theory Utilisation for Improving Traceability and Knowledge Management in Early Design Stages(Elsevier, 2017-01-01) Ríos-Zapata, D.; Pailhès, J.; Mejía-Gutiérrez, R.Decision making processes in design often challenges designers to prioritise specifications and variables in order to develop solutions that are closer to the product's requirement goals. Concerning to support their decisions, different tools and methods are used by engineers and designers allowing to reduce uncertainty in design. Nevertheless, many of these decision support systems are focused in late design stages, such as detailed design and manufacturing design, even if the possibility to influence a new product is higher in early stages. The issues regarding to those situations are often associated to design processes related to multi-physics design, where the modification of geometric-related variables might affect the performance of the solution, and the analysis of tracking the influence of the modifications might generate reprocessing and loses of time, specially when those relations are tricky and are not easily identifiable by analysing equations and a manual analysis of requirements must be performed. This article is centred in proposing a traceability model for early design stages based in graph theory. The proposal supports the information generated in design, from the input requirements (linguistic field) up to mathematical modelling and variables definition (real numbers field). This information is arranged into different layers, allowing a multilevel approach in terms of information management. The model also features a novel solution for weighting vertex in graph model, featuring a model that balances the direction of improvement, the importance and flexibility of any specification and how its behaviour will affect the design variables associated to it. The very few methods proposed in the literature for the establishment of such technical design specifications hinders the learning process in conceptual design subjects. The objective of this article is to propose a structured method for identification of technical design specifications based on the function-behavior-state (FBS) model applied on redesign tasks. The method is being taught to students on the course of methodical design in order to develop their abilities on the identification of technical specifications without relying on previous knowledge on the system and relying more on detailed observation. This method is based on the observation and identification of the different states taken by the attributes of the entities conforming the system (i.e., flows-function carriers-environment). A small scale preliminary study was conducted in order to validate the initial performance of the proposed method. Eight groups made up of undergraduate mechanical engineering students with basic knowledge in conceptual design were instructed to identify technical design specifications. The redesign task was to create an automated solution for replacing the manual production process at small food manufacturing companies. Four groups of students had to establish the specifications using their experience while the other four groups had to use the proposed method. Initial results showed for the proposed method a 36% increase in the number of identified specifications. Departamento de Ingeniería de Diseño; Ingeniería de Diseño (GRID)Wind turbine selection is a critical engineering problem in the overall cost-effectiveness of a wind project. With the wide spreading and democratization of wind energy technologies, non-expert stakeholders are being faced with the challenge of selecting among very different wind turbines. As a comprehensive indicator, the cost of energy can serve as a guide, but reportedly misleading publicity and commonly unavailable information render its calculation more inaccessible and less reliable. Accordingly, this work proposes a method to compare wind turbines, on the basis of the cost of energy, from only nominal specifications and a standard characterization of the local wind conditions. For this endeavor, it was identified that two key variables are not usually available at a preliminary stage: the total efficiency and a feasible hub height. Through a systematic statistical analysis of the trends in a constructed dataset of 176 turbines, it was possible to establish regression models for the estimation of both variables. These models were tested in a validation set and their estimations were found to correctly characterize the central trend of the data without significant deviations. The uncertainty related to the use of both models was addressed by analyzing the 95% Prediction Intervals and the stochastic rank dominance. The established statistical models were then used as the core of the proposed selection method. When the available information is limited or not trustworthy, the steps of the method can be followed as an approach to estimate the cost of energy of a given horizontal axis wind turbine in a given location. © 2018 Elsevier Ltd
