Then, the most relevant variables for the excavation stability in tunnels were selected. These variables were characterized using their probability function, average and standard deviation values. A primary support design was made, in a virtual tunnel, using the typical section of a road tunnel with two lanes. This design contemplated a good quality rock mass, with a RMR (Rock Mass Rating) with values between 50 and 80 (GSI between 43 and 75). The primary support design considered tenso-deformational and fall wedge analysis. Two primary support alternatives were proposed. For each support alternative, two types of analyzes were carried out: deterministic and probabilistic. In deterministic analyses, the input data were the average values of the variables. In probabilistic analysis were used input random variables (including the excavation radius). Finally, a quantitative comparison, utilizing expected costs, between the two design alternatives was elaborated. According to the obtained results, it is possible to point out that reliability design methods are fundamental tools in the project evaluation risk. In the same way, the design with a probabilistic approach allows identifying variables with greater weight in the models used to evaluate stability and therefore focus efforts on having a detailed estimate of these random variables.
