Biodiversity and sustainable finance challenges : an analytical framework to understand the current challenges and how to face them in different economic sectors
(Universidad EAFIT, 2023) Acuna Bayona, Andrés Felipe; Trivino Cortés, Diego Alejandro; Vergara Garavito, Judith Cecilia
This paper focuses on three sectors that significantly impact these Biodiversity and sustainable finance challenges: agriculture, oil & gas, and finance. This paper explores the challenges facing these sectors in adapting to the demands of biodiversity loss and to a sustainable finance. We examine the current practices and initiatives these sectors are implementing and identify areas for improvement. The present analysis aims to provide insights into how these sectors can adapt to meet these challenges and contribute to a sustainable future.

Evaluation of heavy crude oils processing with enhanced heat recovery to overcome current limitations
(Universidad EAFIT, 2014) Delgado Otálvaro, Nirvana; Brust, Holger; Schutz, Wilfred; Builes Toro, Santiago
There are two distillation units at the BAYERNOIL facility in Vohburg Germany -- One of them processes only light crude oils whereas the other both light and heavy crude oils -- The processing capacity of the second is limited by the heater duty which during the last three years and by processing heavy crude oils has often reached the maximal allowed duty -- The main subject of this thesis is to evaluate the effect of an enhanced heat recovery capacity, available in the unit that processes only light crude oils by processing heavy crude oils and to determine where or not, the changeover of the distillation units operational mode is a viable option to overcome the current processing capacity limitation -- Processing heavy crude oils in the unit with the enhanced heat recovery achieved an effective decrease on the heater duty of the crude distillation unit -- However, the thermal dependency between the crude and the vacuum distillation units, caused an increase in the vacuum unit heater duty and a reduction in the steam generation -- This showed that no energetic benefit is accomplished by changing the units operational modes, but rather a shift of the energy requirements in the studied system -- Nevertheless, this energy shift reduces in the first instance the heater duty of the crude distillation unit, presenting an option to overcome the current processing capacity limitation by processing heavy crude oils -- Processing heavy crude oils in the unit with the enhanced heat recovery, implies the permanent processing of light crude oils in the other unit -- This generates heat losses by the final cool down of the atmospheric residue before it is taken to the storage tanks and presents an argument against a simple changeover of the distillation units operational mode

Studies suggest that, despite recent improvements in project risk management, a large part of the megaprojects do not meet the scope, schedule, cost and quality objectives (PMI, 2018, p. 1). A critical evaluation of the use of best risk management practices revealed that many of the conditions for the successful application of these methodological frameworks were not met in the megaprojects; Problems arose due to the little importance of managing risks to anticipate events that could affect the objectives. These impediments severely limit the ability to apply best practices in risk management in megaprojects, insofar as they may not produce meaningful and realistic results. In this way, this research aims to analyze risk management in a megaproject executed in a refinery in the oil sector in Colombia; At the end, the basis for a better form of risk management is explained that allows achieving a more adequate applicability of the reference frameworks. Therefore, the development of a new risk management approach was carried out in this megaproject, which was carried out on the basis of the analysis of the empirical findings of the refinery's experience in the lessons learned from other projects. This approach made it possible to show positive factors such as dedication in identifying risks within the meetings, and elements of opportunities for improvement such as handling bias in decision-making. This made it possible to account for a series of response strategies that could be applied in a systematic and coherent way to manage and mitigate the specific risks of the megaproject. Consequently, it can be concluded that the research study can contribute to the knowledge gap by introducing an adequate way to carry out the risk management of a megaproject. The research study makes an original theoretical, methodological and practical contribution, which adds to the body of knowledge on risk management towards megaprojects.
