The consumption of sweetened beverages in Colombia has increased in recent years, generating overweight and obesity in people who consume such products in excess. Every day, a greater number of people suffer from diseases caused by obesity, to such an extent that the country has catalogued this disease as a public health problem. Some of the strategies proposed by the national government to counteract this problem that causes great losses in the nation's economy, has to do with the creation of taxes through the imposition of taxes that begin to be implemented through the tax reform of 2019, going from a monophase VTA to a multiphase VTA. The objective of this research is to analyze consumers' perception of the relationship between obesity and the increase in taxes on sweetened beverages in Colombia as of the 2019 tax reform. This research is being conducted with men and women over the age of 18 in the city of Pereira, using a mixed methodology: in the first instance with a qualitative exploratory study, which will serve as input for a quantitative descriptive study in the second instance. The results of this study are relevant for future research that focuses on consumption trends derived from the tax reform on the consumption of sugared beverages or other products that the State will tax over the years.
