In this article, the Colombian Civil War (1851) is studied as an administrative experience for the State, because it required the planning, coordination and control of huge resources in order to govern and build up its political legitimacy. Political actions seen as administrative actions, war costs, and the instability of the State are all examined in the light of the analysis of memoires, chronicles, official reports and the periodical press.
