Collaborative visualization and virtual reality in construction projects
(Universidad EAFIT, 2014) Cárcamo Zuluaga, Juan Gonzalo; Trefftz Gómez, Helmuth
In the Colombian construction industry it is recognized as a general practice that di!erent designers deliver 2D drawings to the project construction team -- Some 3D modeling applications are used but only with commercial intentions, thus wasting visualization tools that facilitate the understanding of the project, that allow the coordination of plans between di!erent specialists, and that can prevent errors with high impact on costs in the construction phase of the project -- As a continuation of the project "immersive virtual reality for construction" developed by EAFIT University, the present work intends to demonstrate how a collaborative virtual environment can be helpful in order to improve visualization of construction projects and achieve the interaction of di!erent specialties, evaluating the impact of collaborative work in the design process of the same -- The end result of this research is an application created using freely available tools and a use case scenario on how this application can be used to perform review meetings by di!erent specialist in real time -- Initial test on the system has been made with civil engineering students showing that this virtual reality tool ease the burden of performing reviews where traditionally plans and sharing the same geographical space were needed

Computational modeling of porous and lattice materials is a topic that attracts the attention of ongoing research efforts. Industries such as product design, additive manufacturing, biomedicine, automotive and aerospace are environments in which porous and lattice materials are of special interest given their properties. Computer Aided Design (CAD) three-dimensional (3D) Models are nowadays ubiquitous in many engineering contexts: in the automotive industry, for instance, more than 30.000 different parts are needed for complete vehicle, and most of them have a 3D CAD representation. In this sense, the ability to inspect the topology and the geometry of a standard 3D CAD representation model (such as STEP) is of high importance. More particularly, feature recognition is a task where this model inspection is relevant for engineers and designers, since they can easily find features of interest that are related with specific tasks: optimization, planning of additional manufacturing processes, detection of design errors, etc. Gerotor pumps play an important role in the aerospace industry, specially in the processes of cooling, lubrication and fuel boost and transfer. The design process of gerotor pumps usually involves: i) a geometric modeling stage in a CAD environment, ii) a design verification stage using fluid mechanics simulations to validate the efficiency and other desired characteristics of the pump, and iii) a physical testing stage to verify the predicted characteristics of the pump in a real test bank once the design has been validated through a simulation tool. Digital Twins would allow a faster workflow for the design and testing of gerotor pumps. This work presents a compilation of different contributions to the problems stated in this introduction.

Cyber physical systems (CPSs) are complex systems whose performance depends on the interactions between heterogeneous subsystems, the external environment, and the interrelations among natural systems and its cyber-physical augmentations -- Any fault that occur during these diverse and interrelated interactions may cause failure or a malfunction of the entire system -- The traditional multi-aspects modelling techniques developed for analysing complex systems performance can to some extent fundamentally be used in the analysis of CPSs -- The problem, however, is that these modelling techniques do not consider the consequences of the integration of natural systems and cyber-physical augmentations -- In this article, we propose a novel dual-aspect modelling technique that integrates natural and CPSs functional systems -- This modeling technique includes natural systems such as plants and humans as integral parts of the system, and therefore allow us to study their interactions, influences and effects -- A cyber-physical greenhouse case study is presented to demonstrate the applicability of the proposed modelling technique -- The proposed dual aspect modelling technique will be used in the subsequent stages of our research to analyse the interactions between natural systems and CPS augmentations with a view to identify influential factors of failure in system operation as well as the cause and types or modes failures

Product conceptualization through a 3D natural interface considering in real-time spatial and ergonomic restrictions
(Universidad EAFIT, 2014) Arroyave Tobón, Santiago; Osorio Gómez, Gilberto; Osorio Gómez, Gilberto
Currently, the conceptualization of products whose shape and configuration depends on the context is a highly time-consuming process since it has to be achieved asynchronously between the real environment of the product’s usage and the design office -- In general, the designer manually maps the context in order to create a 3D model of it and then to start the product design process -- The literature presents some proposals to digitalize the context without the need of a manual mapping -- However, these approaches are mainly computer-centric tools where the designer is desk-bound and (s)he does not have a clear spatial perception since the interactions with the 3D models are usually based on 2D interfaces -- On this research we aimed to prove that conceptualization of context-dependent products directly over its real environment through gesture-based modeling tools, allows the designer to consider spatial and ergonomic restrictions that the context imposes to the product, through the real-time analysis of the interaction user-context -- In order to prove that, we developed a tool called Äir-Modeling, in which the designer is able to create virtual conceptual products quickly and efficiently, taking advantage of hand gestures meanwhile (s)he is interacting directly with the real scenario in an Augmented Reality (AR) environment -- Air-Modeling also allows a continuous evaluation of the user postures involved in the product usage and assembly in order to analyze ergonomic risks, and perform the necessary changes in the product shape or configuration from early stages of the design process -- A test was carried out to prove the effects of the use of the proposed tool in the design process in comparison with the traditional way through traditional CAD packages -- We found that the real context can be used as an information input in real-time during product conceptualization -- Beside this, we could notice that virtual parts creation is more efficient from a 3D input than a 2D interface such as a mouse or a keyboard -- This was reflected in the experiment carried out in which 21 users conceptualized a bookcase for a given context using both Air-Modeling and a commercial CAD tool -- It was obtained a reduction in the modeling time using our tool on 76% of the cases with a final average reduction of 44%. Finally, we concluded that 3D modeling in AR environments using the hands as interface and the context as an information input in realtime, allows the designer to conceptualize potential solutions in quick and efficient manner, exploiting as much as possible, inspirational instants -- On the other hand, modeling in a natural scale directly over the real scene prevents the designer to draw his/her attention on dimensional details but allows him/her to focus on the product itself and its relation with the environment -- Besides, developing 3D models in natural scale allows analyzing the interaction between the user, the context and the virtual model for determining ergonomic issues related with the product usage or assembly process -- We believe that this kind of technologies makes the development of customized products more efficient by adding spatial and ergonomic restrictions to the conceptualization process in real-time -- This facilitates the convergence to the design solution, possibly avoiding some iteration in the design process

In the context of multidisciplinary complex systems design, modelling is a key aspect -- It allows designers to validate designs at early design stages -- Consequently, reducing the uncertainty regarding if the product fulfils the initial requirements, so they can go through the remaining development stages knowing that have found an optimal solution -- In this work, a virtual prototype of an automated greenhouse irrigation system is modelled and compared with the real system implementation, finding some differences and similarities between both system testing approaches -- The intrinsic dependence of experimentation and modelling is also discussed, as sometimes experimental data is needed to feed virtual models
