    La relación entre educación, inserción productiva y migración juvenil rural : mecanismos desde la literatura económica

    This study examines the relationship between education, productive inclusion, and rural youth migration through the mechanisms identified in the economic literature. It systematizes and compares the theoretical and empirical channels through which education influences rural youths’ labor trajectories and their propensity to migrate. The theoretical framework integrates contributions from labor and development economics, including job search and matching models, dual economy and rural-urban migration theories, human capital theory, and the literature on structural transformation and sectoral reallocation. Based on this framework, the study reviews empirical evidence from Latin America, with a particular focus on Colombia, suggesting that higher levels of education are associated with lower dependence on low-productivity agricultural employment, higher probabilities of insertion into more productive rural non-agricultural employment, and expanded opportunities for entrepreneurship and territorial attachment. However, the literature also documents strong structural constraints, that limit the potential of education as a mechanism for reducing rural youth migration. The study concludes by highlighting the heterogeneity of these mechanisms across urban and rural contexts and by identifying avenues for future research aimed at establishing causal relationships and designing evidence-based models of rural productive inclusion.
