Colombia generates energy on important percentage by hydroelectric power stations. One of them is El Peñol - Guatape´s dam located on Antioquia´s Eastern, it was builded on the 60s and 70s with strong social impacts to the community on its direct influence zone, because of the absence of an enviromental and social responsability law at that time. The community reacted before the new situation and forced involved companies to take special measures regarding management and compensation; this way of handling the situation became a learning source for public and private authorities, joining other projects which were convulsing the region; as a result a Regional Auntonomous Corporation – CORNARE was created. At the present with a more mature enviromentally legislation, climate change concerns, carbon footprint reduction and more attention given to a growing energy demand; there´s a possibility for non conventional energy sources like little hydrolectric power stations, with less financial and technical requirements, lower enviromental impact, less law requirements than other energy generation projects with dam or reservoir. Nevertheless, this last priority demands more attention to regional development, considering a big number of building requests. This situation calls for a consideration to learned lessons and some caution principles in order to guarantee energy projects with social and enviromental suntainability over time
