Despite its historical adaptability, recent competition and inattention to emerging opportunities threaten its future sustainability, requiring an urgent review of its business strategy. Recognizing the key elements of a business ecosystem is presented as an alternative for the leading company, since this approach allows us to understand the relationships between the different market actors and how these can generate value for everyone. A case study was carried out, using the qualitative method through the application of semi-structured interviews with experts in the natural gas sector and a review of the literature on business ecosystems, their key elements and business sustainability. The actors, activities, positions and relationships of a business ecosystem are key elements of the distribution and commercialization of natural gas that influence its operation and from there allow it to discover new forms of organization, weave systemic value relationships that allow improving competitiveness, creation of value and sustainability for the entire network.
