Ítem Offshoring, intellectual property rights and associated risks(Universidad EAFIT, 2019) Rodríguez González, David; Tamayo Plata, Mery PatriciaThis paper empirically examines the existing relationship between offshoring flows and the overall conditions of countries. As an approximation of the latter, the strength of intellectual property rights (IPRs) and country risk are used in order to consider the institutional and macroeconomic aspects, respectively. Through a fixed effects model and Tobit model with random effects, we have found that stronger IPRs promote an increase in offshoring flows. On the other hand, when the entire sample is considered (developed and developing countries), riskier countries receive higher offshoring flows, but when the sample only includes emerging countries, the relationship is reversed. The evidence also indicates that the level of development and the type of industry influence offshoring flows.
