This thesis project aimed to develop a pre-feasibility study to evaluate the viability of an export process for sugarcane-derived products to the United States market for El Galapal company. For this purpose, a mixed-method research approach was conducted with descriptive scope and non-experimental design, analyzing through seven (7) studies (sectoral and environmental context – market – technical – organizational – legal – environmental – financial) the relevance of the initiative. The sectoral assessment revealed a favorable environment for panela exports, supported by the existence of a Free Trade Agreement with the United States and growth exceeding 8% annually in consumption of these products in that territory. Additionally, the U.S. market was identified as having potential demand of 45,000 tons annually, valued at USD 135 million (in which Colombia participates with only 8%). In organizational terms, it was found that the installed capacity (250 tons annually) allows for export initiation (with 60 tons for year 1, scaling up to 245 in year 5) while maintaining domestic operations, and that the artisanal process certified through ASME diagram documents 12 critical stages. The organizational study contemplated a structure of 17 permanent employees plus temporary workers during harvest season, with three strategic management areas: Exports (prospecting, negotiation, international logistics), Production (planning, quality control, certifications), and Administrative-Financial (accounting, finance, human resources). The legal study highlighted the importance of a binational framework (in Colombia: operation as S.A.S. with commercial registration, NIT, exporter RUT, and ANLA, INVIMA, ICA, GMP licenses; in the United States: CBP importer registration, FDA FSMA food facility registration, nutritional labeling 21 CFR 101, certified customs broker, APHIS phytosanitary compliance, EPA regulations, and Bioterrorism Act traceability). The environmental assessment identified positive impacts (biodiversity conservation through organic agriculture, green employment, bagasse utilization as biofuel, wastewater treatment) and negative impacts (energy consumption 40% carbon footprint, combustion emissions, water consumption 500 liters/ton, maritime transport emissions) derived from the project, while the five-year financial study demonstrated robust viability: NPV COP 3,024 million (12.5% rate), IRR 84.7% annually, B/C Ratio 2.28, Payback Period 1.22 years (with an initial investment of COP 573.5 million financed 65% with equity and 35% credit).

The present study focuses on the pre-feasibility of producing and commercializating Hass avocados, aiming to compare two export alternatives: selling export-quality avocados to exporting companies versus exporting them directly. The analysis is based on the quantity of Hass avocados produced at El Tablazo farm, located in Abejorral, Antioquia. This project arises as an attempt to find solutions to various challenges faced by the owners of El Tablazo farm over the years in avocado production, such as high domestic supply during certain periods of the year, short harvesting windows, and the volatility of avocado prices in both national and international markets. Amid these challenges and opportunities, the farm owners have identified the growing international market as a chance to pursue forward integration by evaluating different export approaches that could help increase profitability. Therefore, this project aims to conduct a pre-feasibility analysis of Hass avocado production and commercialization for export, comparing sales to exporting companies with direct export. The goal is to determine the viability of each alternative based on the farm’s harvest. To achieve this purpose, the study will be developed using the UNIDO methodology, as it integrates market, administrative, technical, risk, environmental, legal, and financial analyses. The study’s objectives are to assess the financial viability of Hass avocado production and export, analyzing the key factors that influence its commercialization in international markets under two schemes: sales to exporting companies and direct export. The research will examine the macroenvironment, including demand, prices, regulations, and phytosanitary requirements in the main export destinations. Additionally, it will consider the environmental impacts of production and export logistics, along with an analysis of operational and financial costs. Through a descriptive study, relevant information will be collected and evaluated under the UNIDO methodology, considering the sector’s constraints and opportunities to determine the project’s feasibility. At the conclusion of this pre-feasibility study, the aim is to provide a solid foundation for decision-making regarding the most viable modality for the international commercialization of Hass avocados, considering technical, economic, and environmental feasibility.

Zonas francas y sofisticación tecnológica de las exportaciones colombianas
(Universidad EAFIT, 2025-10-30) Del Rosario Suero, Cinthia Esther; López Barrantes, Silvio Andrés
This study analyzes the relationship between Colombian free zones and the technological sophistication of exports over the period 2005–2024. It adopts a non-experimental, longitudinal design with a descriptive–correlational scope, grounded in a quantitative approach. A technological sophistication index was developed based on Lall’s (2000) classification, applied to microdata covering both total exports and those originating from free zones. The findings reveal that free zones display a technological sophistication index 42.7% higher than that of national exports and, on average, contributed 2.3% to the national index during the study period. Nevertheless, their relative weight in foreign trade remains limited, which may restrict their structural impact. At the subnational level, coastal departments such as Atlántico, Bolívar, and Valle del Cauca account for the largest share, underscoring the importance of geographic location. Heterogeneous trajectories were also observed: in some cases, the establishment of permanent free zones coincided with improvements in sophistication in Cundinamarca and Risaralda; in Quindío, with deterioration; while in Cauca and Santander, no significant effects were detected. The study concludes that free zones may operate as enclaves of diversification and resilience, particularly in the face of external crises, but they do not by themselves constitute engines of technological transformation. Their contribution ultimately depends on structural characteristics of the departments, which the literature links to governance, incentives, and infrastructure.
