This thesis aims to develop a methodological tool to support Colombian private-sector companies in transitioning towards sustainable business models through the integration of strategies focused on creating shared value. Based on a literature review and a comparative analysis of thirteen national and international certification standards, a diagnostic questionnaire was designed comprising five key dimensions: governance and sustainable strategy, environmental management and resource efficiency, human capital and labor practices, social impact and community engagement, and innovation and shared value creation. The questionnaire enables organizations to identify their maturity level in sustainability, assess organizational strengths and gaps, and receive specific technical recommendations per dimension. The research is grounded in a robust conceptual framework that interconnects corporate social responsibility, sustainability, social enterprise, and shared value creation, demonstrating their mutual reinforcement and relevance to the Colombian business context. As a result, the study delivers a practical, flexible, and context-sensitive tool applicable to both large corporations and small and medium-sized enterprises. This proposal aims to bridge the gap between sustainability discourse and its real-world implementation, contributing to the transformation of traditional business models into more inclusive, responsible, and resilient enterprises.

This research design develops a Community Visual Manual for Forest Traceability and Legality with a gender focus for Afro-Colombian communities in the Darién region of Chocó. The study employs a qualitative participatory action research methodology and participatory design with women leaders from Riosucio, Carmen del Darién, and Nuevo Belén de Bajirá. The main outcome is a technical tool based on ancestral iconography that democratizes access to forestry regulations and strengthens women's territorial governance. The study concludes that women's technical empowerment is crucial for environmental sustainability and the professionalization of the forestry value chain under the principles of social management. Using a qualitative approach and a case study framework, the methodology integrated co-creation with women leaders from the municipalities of Riosucio, Carmen del Darién, and Nuevo Belén de Bajirá. The main outcome was the design of a visual tool that uses ancestral iconography—such as machete marks and rula symbols—to democratize access to forestry legality. It is concluded that the technical empowerment of women not only professionalizes the value chain in contrast to the traditional male role, but is also crucial for environmental sustainability. By leading traceability and natural regeneration processes (respecting the "parent trees"), women ensure the sustainability of forest resources and the economic autonomy of their territories. This intervention demonstrates that, through Social Management, it is possible to transform ancestral knowledge into tools of technical power and territorial governance.

This research seeks to highlight how the ancestral exploitation of gold in the village of San Antonio in the municipality of Zaragoza clearly demonstrates the various social and cultural problems in the region. These problems have historically plunged the region into a latent paradox. On the one hand, artisanal mining is the main source of income for families in Zaragoza who live among gold every day, as both a source of wealth and an ancestral tradition. On the other hand, communities are faced with a lack of genuine recognition and guarantees of their rights. This master's thesis calls for the creation of processes for the genuine recognition of the ancestral mining practices of the region's inhabitants, which would largely guarantee that their lives are lived within the bounds of legality and crime, given that historically, nearly 90% of the population relies on mining as their main source of livelihood. The state's inability to territorialize public mining policy paints a bleak picture for the community of San Antonio.

This research analyzes the implications for the perception of the quality of sustainability practices assessed through ESG ratings (Environmental, Social and Governance) and the adoption of reporting standards for non-financial information in leading companies in Mercado Integrado Latinoamericano (MILA). It also examines how standardization, homogeneity, and information asymmetry influence the actual valuation of assets and investor perceptions. To address this analysis, a quantitative model was constructed to measure the relationship between good sustainability practices and financial profitability. The methodology involves collecting data from companies in Colombia, Mexico, Peru, and Chile that have adopted ESG initiatives, in order to identify patterns and levels of correlation using econometric models. The research seeks to contribute to the literature on sustainability and finance by offering tools for more informed investment decision-making.

This study assesses the pre-feasibility of constructing a Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) based on a rotating biodisc system in the rural district of Tablacito, located in the municipality of Rionegro, Antioquia. A comprehensive analysis was conducted, encompassing sectoral, technical, legal, environmental, administrative, financial, and risk-related aspects, using the UNIDO methodology. The findings indicate that, although the initiative is not feasible from a strict financial standpoint, it represents a significant social and environmental value, since it contributes to rural sanitation, the protection of water sources, and the achievement of sustainable development goals. The evaluation considered the local context and the non-commercial nature of the project, concluding that its relevance is justified by the collective benefits it generates, beyond monetary returns.
Evaluación de alternativas fotovoltaicas para la descarbonización de la generación termoeléctrica en Colombia

The energy sector is one of the main emitters of greenhouse gases, making its transformation crucial in addressing climate change. In Colombia, although the electricity matrix is primarily based on hydropower, coal-fired plants remain essential to support the system during droughts, especially under El Niño events. This reliance on coal poses a challenge to meeting the country’s climate commitments. This research assesses the feasibility of converting coal-fired power plants into solar photovoltaic generation. The analysis incorporates solar potential in strategic regions, the current conditions of the national electricity system, and international comparative experiences. The results show that, although there is a favorable perception of the energy transition and the use of photovoltaic sources, intermittency emerges as a weakness that affects acceptance and operational reliability. It is concluded that successful transitions require strategic planning, community participation, and labor reconversion to ensure a just transition. Likewise, socioeconomic, cultural, and environmental conditions are decisive for the success of projects. The financial model developed shows that turning coal plants into to large-scale photovoltaic systems (>50 MW) is not currently viable under market conditions, although it improves significantly under scenarios of increased carbon tax and emission reduction certificates. These findings highlight the need for strong public policies and complementary technological solutions to enable the decarbonization of Colombia’s electricity sector.
Evaluación de la efectividad del Pago por Servicios Ambientales (PSA) en el proyecto Oriente BancO2

Payment for Ecosystem Services (PES) schemes have positioned themselves globally as key instruments for climate mitigation and rural development; however, existing literature questions their actual capacity to generate social value beyond monetary transfers and their long-term financial sustainability. This study evaluates the effectiveness and socio-environmental impact of the "Sustainable Forest Management under the BancO2 scheme" project in Eastern Antioquia (2017–2024). A mixed-methods research design was employed, integrating the Systematization of Experiences with 80 families, interviews with institutional stakeholders, and the calculation of the Social Return on Investment (SROI). The results reveal an SROI ratio of 2.22:1, indicating high added value creation for the region. However, this positive balance rests upon a phenomenon of "Subsidized Efficiency": environmental success (conservation of an average of 104.6 ha per family) coexists with structural fragilities, such as a gender gap in productive income (8.5:1), an aging social base (average age 57.8 years), and an evident incentive decoupling, where 100% of participants conserve driven by ethical commitment despite the erosion of the payment’s purchasing power. It is concluded that the model is effective not as a market transaction, but as a "Custodianship Rent" that validates the peasant role. To guarantee future sustainability, it is imperative to transition from welfare-based transfers to investment in territorial capabilities that strengthen economic autonomy and ensure generational renewal.
