Venture Capital "is a form of investment that has shown a boom in recent years, not only in developed countries, but has been consolidating in emerging countries such as Colombia" (Unit for Analysis of Financial Markets UAMF, 2015, page 1), being promoters of important projects that contribute to the economic development of the countries -- This form of financing, which currently forms an industry and has a large participation in the economy of several countries and particularly in Colombia, is key to economic and social development, since it reaches sectors where other traditional mechanisms to obtain resources such as banking sector and other entities that can issue microloans do not access -- Therefore, in this article, we will analyze the potential that microenterprises in the city of Pereira may have to obtain leverage under this modality, identifying microenterprises with one year of registration before the Chamber of Commerce and needs that they present and that can be corrected through the VC, as well as the requirements and stages for participation in VC through a financial strategy, as a way to contribute to the sustainability and growth of medium and small businesses in the city of Pereira, positively impacting one of the biggest restrictions that the companies of this sector have in the city

Estrategias de desinversión y captura de oportunidades en portafolios VC latinoamericanos
(Universidad EAFIT, 2025) Piedrahita Velásquez, Agustín; Botero Gaviria, Camilo
Over the last decade, venture capital (VC) in Latin America has grown significantly in funds, volume, and sophistication, yet many managers face a “gray zone” of operational startups with limited growth and no clear exit paths, immobilizing capital and delaying returns. This mixed-method, exploratory-descriptive study combines a quantitative analysis of regional VC portfolios with semi-structured interviews with fund managers to evaluate alternative liquidity mechanisms (secondary sales, continuation funds, hybrid structures) and their applicability in the region. The study aims to characterize the magnitude of this phenomenon, identify its barriers and opportunities, and propose guidelines for a hybrid financial vehicle designed to unlock retained value for investors and entrepreneurs, thereby strengthening the liquidity and sustainability of the VC ecosystem.

Estrategias financieras para la consecución de capital : guía para el caso de las startups
(Universidad EAFIT, 2023) Gómez Aguas, Ángela María; Guzmán Cantillo, Andrés; Gómez Toro, Catalina
This article aims to investigate the financial strategies that contribute to obtaining funding for startups in capital rounds. Among the reasons for their failure, it is evident that entrepreneurs' strategies focus on short-term opportunities without considering the design and execution of plans geared towards medium and long-term sustainability, which would enable them to build a solid financial model for securing the capital required for their corporate development. To achieve this, a qualitative research approach was employed, involving in-depth interviews with startup founders, venture capitalists, investment funds, academics, and other ecosystem stakeholders. Additionally, a survey was designed for early-stage entrepreneurs to assess their knowledge and perceptions regarding capital raising. Finally, a literature review was conducted to gather theoretical and empirical evidence on the subject. The findings of this research contribute to startup entrepreneurs in making informed decisions regarding financial planning, thereby fostering a thriving startup ecosystem.

(Universidad EAFIT, 2021) Ríos Sánchez, Nicolás; Restrepo Tobón, Diego Alexander
This paper seeks to characterize the venture capital industry in Colombia and the substantial elements inherent in its investment thesis in early-stage technology-based companies. To achieve this, a content analysis of both qualitative and quantitative information from primary and secondary sources was used. With the research, it was possible to know from the sample of funds evaluated, the average of economic resources invested by the funds in their selected companies, as well as to determine the selection criteria of these funds and the contribution to the companies in terms of strategic support they offer in their investments. This research contributes to the understanding of the venture capital fund industry and the contribution that Venture Capital Funds (VCF) can make as a source of financing to companies with large innovation component and a solid founding team that supports and contributes to the scaling of these companies.

Gestión del riesgo corporativo y opciones reales
(Universidad EAFIT, 2010) Rosales Gómez:, Jorge Armando; Torres Avendaño, Gabriel Ignacio
At present there are several methodologies for the valuation of investment projects such as discounted cash flows, discounted dividends, and the options valuation, among others. The first two methodologies are the most common into the real market, which are based only on a positive VPN. However these types of valuations show several technical flaws, in particular, they are static analyses which do not take into account market issues as macroeconomic factors, risk, volatility, etc. Besides, it is a matter of fact that there are a lot of projects with negative VPN that in some specific moments achieves such appraisal that, in the end of the evaluated period, the result is absolutely positive.

La influencia del capital de riesgo (venture capital) en la superación del valle de la muerte en un grupo de empresas de base tecnológica en Colombia
(Universidad EAFIT, 2023) Celis Pérez, Alejandro; Yepes Callejas, Edgar Rene
The valley of death can be defined as "a condition of blockage or latency experienced by innovation projects, for which progress has been made in the development of technological dimensions, but other dimensions of the business model, necessary to carry out said innovations up to the stages of new product development (DNP), operation and commercialization.” (Yepes, 2022). Within the dominant theory, the use of alternative financing mechanisms has predominated, as a response to this condition and as a strategy to get out of the valley of death. Within these alternative investment mechanisms, venture capital predominates, which can be defined as a financing instrument for high-growth companies where investors buy shares in these companies, providing financing, monitoring, experience and contacts with the industry (Kelly & Kim, 2018). This mechanism is specially designed to address the gap that exists between the demand for capital by emerging companies and the supply available by traditional private institutions and/or public institutions. The objective of this work was to examine the influence of venture capital on the financial performance of a group of companies in Colombia and its role in overcoming the valley of death. For this, the financing operations with venture capital that were carried out in Colombia were consulted in specialized databases. Subsequently, the years between 2015 and 2021 were selected as the analysis period and the financial results of the companies that received financing in those years were consulted. This work makes important contributions to the study of the valley of death, because, to date, from the review of the literature, there are no works that have been identified that have validated the occurrence of this phenomenon in technology-based companies in Colombia, as well as the influence of venture capital financing in the performance of these organizations from the financial point of view that are reflected in the overcoming, or not, of the valley of death. The most recent exercises have focused on studying R&D projects in university institutions to identify the dimensions associated with the occurrence of the Valley of Death, even before these projects have received funding.
