Batería-como-servicio (Baas) vs. Batería-como-producto (Baap) : economía de bienes duraderos y efectos sobre la oferta de baterías de segunda vida
(Universidad EAFIT, 2026-03-06) Gallego Molina, Pablo Andrés; Chaparro Cardona, Juan Camilo
This master’s thesis examines the economic and strategic effects of Battery-as-a-Product (BaaP) and Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) business models on the availability and competitiveness of second-life batteries (SLB) for stationary energy storage. The study draws on the durable goods literature and the logic of strategic interaction under Nash equilibrium, recognizing that contractual access to the battery changes risk allocation, residual value, and asset traceability (Bulow, 1982; Waldman, 2003; Gibbons, 1992). The thesis analysis is organized into four modules. The first compares the total cost of ownership (TCO) for the user under the battery-as-a-product and battery-as-a-service schemes, showing that a reduction in the price of a new pack tends to increase the relative attractiveness of purchasing. The second estimates the potential flow of second-life batteries using a stock–flow approach based on the diffusion of electric vehicles and the distribution of retirements. The third contrasts the levelized cost of storage (LCOS) between new batteries and repurposed batteries, showing that a lower initial CAPEX does not necessarily guarantee a lower levelized cost when refurbishment costs, replacements, and lower usable energy delivered are present (Schmidt et al., 2019; Steckel et al., 2021). The fourth represents the strategic interaction between the manufacturer, the user, and the government, showing that, without public intervention, the equilibrium favors BaaP, while traceability policies, standards, and extended producer responsibility can shift the equilibrium toward BaaS/SLB (European Commission, 2023; Harper et al., 2019). The thesis concludes that SLB competitiveness depends not only on technology and cost drivers but also on institutional conditions that facilitate coordination and efficient asset recovery.
