Ítem Efecto del delito y los cultivos ilícitos sobre el acceso a servicios financieros : análisis para Colombia(Universidad Eafit, 2020) Mena Serna, Diana Marcela; Tobón Zapata, SantiagoIn this research, I examine whether crimes and coca crops affect access to financial services, and financial risk. I build a quarterly panel for all 1,122 municipalities of Colombia covering 2010 through 2019, and estimate two-way fixed effects regressions to control for time and municipality invariant heterogeneity. I document three main findings. First, homicide rates are negatively correlated with access to credit. Second, property crime rates seem to be positively correlated with access to credit, though these estimates are less precise in some specifications. Finally, the presence of coca crops is negatively associated with access to credit and savings deposits, and positively associated with the share of risky microloans portfolios. These results add to a growing literature on the relationship between criminal activities and financial services.
